What is the average pay of a first year teacher?

It depends on the school district and the state. You also have to look at the pay 10 or 20 years down the road.... school districts in need of more staff often will offer what appears to be better than average pay for a new teacher, but then pay raises are almost nonexistent. My husband has been teaching for 12 years, and is at Level 3/Master, and makes less than $5000 per year more than I do, as a 3 year teacher at Level 1. Some states are now going to a Tiered system, with even pay across districts (with additional stipends for ghetto or rural school employees to attract staff). In New Mexico, a new teacher starts at $30,000. After 3 years, the teacher (if he/she passes the dossier review) moves to Level 2, and a raise to $35,000 (soon to be $40,000 if the legislature delivers on its promise). A level 3 (6+ years experience, Master's Degree, and dossier process passed), right now, makes the same as a level 2, but in a few years they will be paying $50,000 (if they deliver on the promise).

If you are looking at moving to a different state, make sure you check cost of living before you move...pay may be higher, but if housing/utilities is higher also....

The best thing to do if you want information on pay scales in a particular state or district, is to contact the human resources office for that district, and ask for a copy of the pay scale for certified employees.

It depends on the school district. The more education you have though, the more you get paid. Here's a website of a school district to give you an idea of what it looks like. In one city the difference between salaries in two different districts was $5000 so you have to look into each one to see which one you would want to work at.

Each step means a year teaching experience.

It depends on what level of teaching you are doing. Grammer school is between 24000-30000 and highschool starts at 40000 depending upon your level of education it may be higher.
