how do you rewind a garage door spring?

Do you see that thing at the end of the spring with the holes in it? Notice the screw? That's what holds the tension on the spring. Get two rods about 12 to 14 inches long that will fit the holes (longer rods=less effort, if you have room to work). Place one of the rods in a hole and get a good grip. Now loosen the screw (be very careful because the tension on the things can be tremendous). Using the rods, walk the star around the tensioning rod alternating holes until you have released the tension. Next, reattach and align the cables and reverse the un-tensioning drill. Be sure to tighten the set screw very tight to prevent slippage.

Unless you want to win a "Darwin Award" or have your name cited as an example of someone who did something pretty dumb, DO NOT mess with garage door springs. They can be lethal. Put a crow-bar in your wallet and call for service and let them handle it.

i have heard of people having these springs snap and thread through their hands when they over tentioned these springs, be soooo careful when doing this. a tip... spray white spray paint across the spring when it is untentioned to keep track of how many times you have turned it.

make sure you attach the cables at even tentions or else your garage door will not hang staight.

This is a very dangerous operation and if you are not sure of what you are doing you should leave it to someone that is experienced. This spring has been know to severly mame and even kill.

that spring is strong enough to throw you out of the garage...hire a pro.

The money you think you will save by not hiring someone who knows what they are doing will probably be spent at the emergency room if you aren't very very careful.

1/2" rebar will work well for the rods........ ,make sure u tighten both sides is a duel spring
