I'm analyzing text for style and diction in an undergraduate composition theory class. One metrics in my analysis matrix asks for a count of "monosyllabic substantive words".

It's any word or phrase that -ever- get used as a noun. Ever.
Gerunds.
Pronouns.
Adjectivals.

substantive has to do with nouns. it is a noun or group of words that act as a noun.
The new term for a predicate nominative is a substantive compliment. A predicate adjective is now called an adjective complement.
They are asking for one syllable nouns: cat, dog, house

Too bad your teacher apparently hasn't caught on to how to communicate with undergraduates.
