Love has several different meanings in the English language, from something that gives a little pleasure ("I loved that meal") to something for which one would die for (patriotism, pair-bonding). It can describe an intense feeling of affection, an emotion or an emotional state. In ordinary use, it usually refers to interpersonal love. As an experience usually felt by a person for another person, it is commonly considered impossible to describe. Dictionaries tend to define love as deep affection or fondness. In colloquial use, according to polled opinion, the most favoured definitions of love include the words:

    1. life - someone or something for which you would give your life.

    2. care - someone or something about which you care more than yourself.

    3. friendship - favoured interpersonal associations or relationships.

    4. union - a synergistic connection, as in the perfect union of two souls.

    5. family - people related via common ancestry, religion, or race, etc.

"We know that love exists, not only as a feeling, as an act of one's will, or as a relational status, but also as a substance. How do we know? Because people are moved and changed by it. It keeps things alive, and without it, they die. It makes them grow, and without it, they are stunted. It is the most inspiring force on earth -- the desire to love and be loved. It is a nutrient for the heart, and every other part of a living being. Everything that lives responds to love and rejoices when in union with it. It is also an eternal substance that once created, can never die, even though it may go into a sleep state, it can always be reawakened, as the Spring. It has its own language and expresses itself in poetic mysteries, ubiquitous to all things, for those who can find it. It is a fire that combusts within a person and grows from that explosion, a body of love, an essence, mist, or flame, that cannot dwell alone." (by Sevi Regis, from the novel, SoulSongs.)

Since a very long time ago, people have searched for the meaning of love. But even the great philosophers, with their profound definitions, could not fully touch its true essence. In a survey of 4-8 year olds, kids share their views on love.

Love is putting your significant other before you always. Saying you are sorry even if it isn't your fault. Hug, kiss, and say I love you even if you are only going to the mailbox--you never know when you'll never be able to say it again. Kiss and make up even if you just want to yell and scream for 10 minutes. NEVER start an argument about petty things--is it really worth arguing for hours about why the car has a tiny scratch or why he left the toilet seat up?

Love is putting someone else's needs before yours. It's sacrificing yourself so the other person can be safe and happy. Its when you would do anything for that person, or be anything for that person. It's when you see the perfection in a person, even if others don't. Love is giving your heart to this special someone, and trusting them enough not to break it.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.Love never fails.

    1 Corinthians 13:4

i read it from the bible but i have my own definition of what love is...

love is sacrifice.. it's when you give your best though you don't expect anything in return... it is when you make harsh decisions... it is when reality seems to be better than fantasies... it is unconditional...

Love describes the feelings you have for someone, you care about their well-being, their interests, their feelings. You want to share your life with that person. Love depends on trust. True love is when you care about a person so much that you are willing to die for that person.

I don't think there is a meaning to it. It has a purpose which is to cling to people together so that the biological offspring will have the best chance for survival because both influences of mother and father are needed to be well-adjusted.

Source(s): My own ideas I guess. I subscribe to alot of biological theories.
