H-e-l-l-a!?

I went to high school in Northern California. This term (h-e-l-l-a) is known there. Where did it originate? Who made it up? It was a long time ago, but still I wonder.

The Greeks call their own country "Hellas", as in "Hellenic". Remember "Helen of Troy"? (I'm talking Homer, not the stupid Brad Shi^H^H^HPitt movie.)

A lot of places in the US - schools, governments, et al - use Latin and Greek references to create a feeling of self-importance.

in the north of CA, hella is a commonly used phrase. Just as common the phrase "brokeback" is in San Francisco.

    ????? You mean like hella-good?

I'm curious now that you mention it. I live in the South and it's been a term we've used since I was a kid (near 30 now).
