How Many of you feel as I do that Immgrates should learn English and apply legally for citizenship?

immigrants do learn English and those that can apply for legal status do. you assume that immigrants don't learn English but to learn a new language at an academic proficiency level experts say it takes on average 7 years. for many immigrants maybe they don't reach that level but their children who are educated here in American do much better adapting to the language and the culture here. as far as applying for a working visa or resident status immigrants must hire a lawyer, find an employer who will back their status request, prove that there job can't be done by an American, pay approximately ten thousand dollars, and wait about 6 years for that status to be approved or denied. it's not as easy as you might think especially for many illegals who have very little education...

Learning English IS a requirement for citizenship, so is at least 5 years as a Legal Permanent Resident before you can apply for citizenship, and a written test on US history, but these people are ILLEGAL so it doesn't apply!

I think people are misinterpreting the question.

Yes, immigrants should apply for legal admission to the USA.

And yes, immigrants that come over should expect to speak English. The reason it is so necessary to have bilingual anything is because of the illegals. Part of being approved for citizenship is having a modest ability to speak English.

BTW, I know plenty of LEGAL aliens that speak fabulous English. Why oh why don't the illegals follow this lead???

I agree. There are quite a free English classes and from the number of protesters,there should plenty of people to help them fill out the applications for citizenship.

Sounds right to me, if anyone was immigrating to France or Russia - those countries would expect you to know THEIR language.

I see illegal immigration as a slap in the face to ever person that has ever gone through the paperwork and waited for admission.

How would you feel if YOU stood in line, followed the rules and someone jumped a head of you in line and moved you and your family to the rear just because they didn't feel like waiting?

How many times would you let it happen to YOU before you became upset? Especially when everyone cares more for the rule breakers than for YOU .

I feel that they should be set limits and take an exam of all things British - and/or American - and if they pass this exam, then they can apply for citizenship.

Those that fail have three attempts. If they don't pass by the third attempt, then they should be booted back to their own residence.

I would agree that "immigrants" should learn English and be in this country legally. I would also suggest that "citizens" learn to spell, or at least how to use spell check.

If you would immigrate to the country which the language is different than yours, you should learn the language of that country. If not, how are you going to live and work/go to school in that country? How are you going to survive?

How are you going to be independant and be smart? If not, one thing for sure, Americans will belittle you.
