Why should one read "Lord of Rings"?

To the guy who said he read ROTK and thought it was bad...that's not how you do. For people used to lighter reading, you have to start with book one, and get caught into it.You won't like it...as much if you do it peice-meal like that.

#1 you can't judge a book by its movie. No you don't know the story, lol! There are SOOOOOOO many diferences!!! the biggest...um...it was actually 17 years from Bilbo's b-day party to the day Frodo left. Pippin was 12, Merry 20-30, and Sam about 33 at the begining of the trilogy.

#2 It's much better then the movie. They left out so many hilarious lines!

#3 I was dicouraged before I hit the first page. Less discouraged. 1st chapter. Not really discourages. By the end of the first 3-4 chapters I was well into it. Actually when I was 13 I read the whole trilogy in 4 days.

#4 It's like you're introduced to a whole new world. Tolkien does an excellent job at making you feel like you're there.

#5 ummm... it's just worth it. You meet so many characters they don't have in the movie. Tom Bombadil!!! He's a main character in the book(and a very lovable one at that), but (unless in the extended edition which I don't have) they don't even mention him in the movie!!!

The films are rubbish compared to the book. The book tells the actual story - not the one Peter Jackman fiddled with to fit his films. The Two Towers is so thrilling and Shelob's lair belongs in the second book not the third film. You can nitpick how much of the film was wrong! The Lord of the Rings was voted the best book of the millennium (1000 - 2000). It is the ultimate fantasy novel and accessible to people who don't like fantasy. It may be long but I have read it many times! Don't wait any longer!

some have criticized the films for adopting a markedly different tone from Tolkien's original vision. Noted critic Roger Ebert wrote, "[Jackson] has taken an enchanting and unique work of literature and retold it in the terms of the modern action picture. [...] To do what he has done in this film must have been awesomely difficult, and he deserves applause, but to remain true to Tolkien would have been more difficult, and braver."

1Well if you read the books you are going to find that the books are different from the movies and much more better.

2 You will be able to analyze better the characters 3 plus you will also understand better the plot .

It depends on if your into literature.

Don't just read something for the sake of reading it, it's a waste of time.

...But if you are keen on reading it, it's got excellent characterisation, a unique plot/storyline, and the attention to detail and imagery is amazing.

It's a good trilogy to read, but try reading Tolkien's "the Hobbit" first. It's shorter and gives you a basis on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. If you like the plot in that book, then read the others to find out what happens with the characters and the ring - just to satisfy curiosity.

Lord is just a title. 2 of my favorite authors had "Lord" in their names, Lord Byron and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The name Jehovah has been removed because many thought it only to be spoken by the leaders of their respective religion. Just recently, the Catholic Church, under the direction of the Pope, were instructed to cease using Jehovah, YHWH or the tetragrammaton in any form. Jehovah wants men to know his name. Psalm 83:18 says "That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth."

You have to read this book, because the most beautiful descriptions of nature are in this book.

Because you can feel the war and the struggle of all of the people for saving their area from the evil.

Because you would understand how much the evil is powerful and how much it can affect the humans' hearts.

three good reasons...

the movies are nothin compared to the books, (half the story is cut out, by the way)

it's one of the best fantasy books ever written- tolkien is amazing!! if you want to start reading fantasy, you should know that tolkien was one of the authors who really redefined fantasy.

it's got a really amazing storyline, it's got everything- humour, adventure, romance, magic- everything.

it is pretty long but once you finish it, you won't regret it

Because it is an amazing book

Because there are depths which only an intelligent mind go to, while reading, which no movie can

Because of the sheer magic of words and lyricism that it has

Read it, you'll love it!

I also think novels are vastly overrated. They drag on and on! I work in a bookstore so hate to say this but skip the books, watch the movies instead. At least Peter Jackson understands pacing.
