Do babies have an innate sense of what the most dangerous (or annoying) thing around them is to mess with?

One of my twins has just learned to pull herself up with the help of something sturdy. This means a whole new level of baby proofing. We're finding out what needs to be done rather quickly. What I want to know is... Do babies just "know" what the worst thing is for them to touch? For example: If my daughter pulls herself up to eye level with a bookshelf that has on it a book, a brightly colored red ball, and a sharp but rusty ninja star, she'll go for the star every time. Is this normal?

yes my experience is that they are little octopuses with built in danger magnets...but what would we do without 'em?

Um, Dave these are your kids you're talking about, right? I don't think "normal" plays into it.

But seriously when my kids were young they would always go for the rusty ninja stars every time. No matter where we put those stars those kids would find a way to reach for 'em.

For example, in my old house, I had several bookshelves full of books all in a nice order, alphabetized etc...basically a collection I spent my whole life collecting.

It didn't dawn on me that even though my daughter couldn't read yet, that she wouldn't mind taking them down and chewing all over the bindings! And of course, she picked the most expensive classics to chew on, so even at an early age she had good taste at least.

But since we are talking about your kids, I recommend Military Academy until their at least 21.

No, they do not have an innate sense of what is most dangerous. They just go for whatever catches their attention first. So you will have to go on all fours and baby proof this way. Remove all table cloths and any such thing because a baby learning to pull herself up will grab hold of anything for support.

It's a short few months before your babies learn to crawl..so you better buy a lot of baby proofing products to lock cabinets. Also think about baby gates.

It is normal. I think it's because something like the book or the ball, would be the kind of thing they see every day and are allowed to play with. If they see a knife, they won't have been allowed to touch that before so they are curious of the unknown. Kids do seem to know which furniture is sturdy enough to hoist them up though!

Of course babies are very curious they want to discover their world they have no sense of danger but the more dangerous the more curious sem to be power cords are good examples just keep it outta reach ( out of sight is the best been there done that 4 times well going thru that with number 4 so good luck

I think you're onto something. My ten-mo-old baby girl's favorite toys are cords, (and my husband has a ton of electronics), remotes, phones, PAPER, and tags. She'll find a tag on ANTHING. For the past 3 days her favorite toy has been a baby jar lid. She's sitting among a gagillion toys and the only thing she cares about is the lid. She hasn't started pulling herself up yet but one day very soon I will be running around as much as you.

no they don't "know" what their up against in the world so avoid getting a coffe table when u don't have anything to do use ur leg as a post for her and put things like that in a baby proof door or if theirs another shelf use the other one than that to put a rusty ninga star but just make sure that the book isn't heavy and don't let her put the ball in her mouth which means show her how to play with the ball like banging it on the ground or something but show her where u don't want it so she doesn't do something u don't want her to put it at.........GOT ALL THAT?

I believe this is truly the case. My daughter's new favorite thing to play with is the floor A/C & heater vent. She takes the vent off, leaving a big hole in the floor. She's 20 months, and I swear she's doing it in hopes that her little brother, who is 7 months and crawling, will fall in and magically disappear. We can't figure out a way to secure it, and it's driving me bonkers! Damn landlord will get all pissy if we drive screws through it. *sigh* And when my son is sitting on my lap when I'm at the computer, the first thing he goes for is the scissors. They keep you on your toes, don't they?

I think they're attracted to what they instinctively know they shouldn't play with. My nine-month-old son (who is also pulling himself up on furniture) likes to try to grab scissors, lick the cats, chew on things he finds on the floor... and otherwise gravitate toward germ-ridden, sharp and/or pointy objects.

If you tell them "no," or take it away (which of course I do every time) they become even more determined to play with the item. My son has developed a weird fixation with my cell phone for that reason-- I never let him play with it. So every chance he gets, he snatches my cell phone and starts munching on it. Ew!

Both of my babies seem to have this "sixth" sense also....That's why it's amazing the population hasn't dropped dramatically...We must be doing a fairly good job as parents...of else have LOTS of DUMB luck!!!
