Should the U.S. allocate more money to eliminating the national debt?

When nearly 1/10th of our tax dollar goes to just paying the interest on the national debt, should the government do something about paying it off?

Ok so 1. Our debt is actually mostly to ourselves not other countries although some foreign investors hold U.S. government bonds and such.

    2. Bill Clinton did NOT erase the national debt. That is an impossible task for 1 President to do considering the debt is now something like 8 trillion dollars...I'm not sure of teh exact number. What Clinton did was erase the national deficit for a couple of years. A deficit is the debt for 1 year...the national debt is the accumulation of that.

Now that that's clear...yes more money should be going to pay the national debt. But really, first, we need a balanced budget so that we can stop increasing the debt. And then whatever surplus there is should go towards paying off the national debt instead of tax cuts. not that I'm against tax cuts or anything.

The national debt is just a number ..

No way anyone can pay an insane amount like that back to anyone.

And printing more money would decrease the value of the dollar,to,lets say ...10 cents.

  • No. We should steadily pay it as contracted. I assume you reallize that government debt is in the form of bonds, which are payed on a schedule. There is no advantage to paying it early. In fact, as our productivity increases, and as we are going into an inflationary period, we will be paying it off with cheaper dollars. The national debt is nothing you need to worry about at this time. Our economy is on track to out grow it. The best thing you can do, is be as successful as you can in your job or business, and invest in successful Americn companies. They could, however decrease expenses in other ways, such as entitlement programs, and useless things such as FEMA. The private sector does a better job.

Um... that would not fix the problem.

We ERASED the debt during Clinton's administration.

Bush even "gave" us a refund from the SURPLUS.

BUSH and his cronies have got us back into debt, further then ever before if I'm not mistaken, by prolonging a war we shouldn't be in.

Yes, we should have gone after Osama Bin Laden, and we did. But THAT was in Afganistan, we never found Bin Laden, and all of our resources are going after the rebuilding of a nation we destroyed. Iraq. A place we should not be in.

    I'll make it simple:

Bring back the Line-item veto and get rid of earmarks.

Don't worry I'm sure Democrats will be in office within the next couple of years and taxes will be raised therefore more money to pay off the debt.

Obviously it would be good to pay off the national debt, but not really practical right now. We have too much money invested in unnecessary places to actually be able to do something positive with it.

No!! Just be easier to start over. Everyone forgives everyones debt since whenever it was we went off the gold standard and start over.

  • why don't we quit starting wars and use the money we save to eliminate our debt? hmm?

oh yeah...the economy relies on war. without war, it would all go to hell. well, looks like cutting education funding is the obvious next choice. yep. problem solved. brilliant.

Do you mean printing more--that did not work so well for Germany after WWI. It lead to this dictator with a bad mustache and ethnic hatred. A nasty war.

Yes, and we should allow all people to come here illegally and give them amnesty and allow them to take advantage of all this great country has to offer... wow I wish that had a lot more sarcasm in it.
