omg you brought back so many memories & it's sad as well because i no longer have my grandparents on both sides. i was raised around cattle, & chickens, all my life i was a country girl i use to get chased by the bulls down in the hollor. my other grandparents lived there so i had no choice but to run for my life they were so big & fat they could never catch me lol it was a funny site to see. yes we did have an out-house no running water though we had what you call well water, which was one of my chores i would pump water until my arm went numb. but i would never go to the out-house during the night alone i would wake up my sister, & auntie, & we all would go 2gether. this is no lie my sister & i have seen strange people walking around in the back yard we hauled butt to the out-house & locked the door & stayed in there for sometime lol good thing our auntie, had went with us she told us it was just people out walking around yeah right all hrs of the morning before day light get real. sorry i got a bit carried away here but i just wanted to share some of the funny things with you people that had happened to me as a child. ok i will shut up for now lol.

  • Yes. I had an Aunt who lived in Albany and they still had an out house as late as around 1974. No shower inside either.

You had to take a shower out in the yard in a homemade shower stall.

around 78 they installed a bathroom.

And Outhouse's were kept cleaner than a porta potty because people had enough respect to not make a mess just cause they could.

Now a days people trash bathrooms everywhere just for meaness.

Source(s): And I would pick an outhouse over a porta potty anyday.

When I was a little girl we lived in a farm house and although we had a working bathroom there was still an out house in the back of the yard. I would use it when I was outside playing.

Source(s): We also had to use a pump to get drinking water from a well. That was the BEST cold water.

Sure have. My great aunt had a summer place and she refused to add anything 'modern', including plumbing for a toilet. Someone had plumbed the kitchen, so she left that, thank God, so we could at least bathe in a wash tub and do dishes in the sink...it was hideous! Spiders, crickets, boys peeking in..the horrifying sludge at the bottom of it, i told My mum, never again! When I think of some of these 3rd world countries with no facilities, no indoor loo (oops, I'm not being politically correct, I should have said DEVELOPING COUNTRIES). anyway, have you?

NO! Do you mean a bifi or a accual wooden outhouse with a crecent moon on the door? Iv'e seen an oldfashioned outhouse in Historical Old Town San Diego, it was not in use though. I would honestly rather cop a squat behind one than use one. I have been known to hold my pee for HOURS rather than use a BIFI (port-a-potty).

When i would visit my grandparents in Pa - they had one! While they had a bathroom in the house, the out house was still there - I used it frequently when I was too dirty to come into the house - from playing in the creek!

Since then, my Dad got the house and he made a basement entry - complete with toilet and shower because as grown adults with kids - we all still play in the creek and have to pee from time to time.

Source(s): ...as things change - they remain the same! LOL
