Musicians - What instrument to learn next?

Hi, I've played guitar for some time now and would like a new challenge + to broaden my musical understanding.

I'm into rock music (GnR, Led Zep, Pink Floyd etc.) so I'd be looking to learn either drums, bass or piano/keyboard. Can those in the know list me their opinions on which to go for and why + their pros n cons?

Cheers

I'm a classically trained pianist playing keyboard in a band now, so my opinion may be slightly biased.

However, learning the keyboard would only serve to enhance your musical ability - it's quite different to a lot of instruments out there, and that can help change your perspective when it comes to writing songs. I've picked up the guitar on my own (on the side) and find it interesting how my thought processes differ when I'm in creative mode, depending on what instrument I'm playing at the time.

The pros are that you can focus mainly on playing without worrying about tuning - the piano is tuned already, you just need to make sure you hit the right notes! In this respect, it's quite user friendly to someone just starting out.

The cons are that gigging with a keyboard can be a pain, but given that you're in a rock band, you probably wouldn't suffer the same experience that I do trying to lug a weighted keyboard around...

Best of luck either way, the other instruments you've listed are ones I've played also and I have to say, drumming is one of the most satisfying things ever!

Well I know the basics on guitar and drums and I play quite a good keyboard.

If you go for anything, go for the drums. In a rock band you would traditionally find more combos including Guitar, Bass and Drums. Keyboard usually doenst play that big a role.

Pros: you can play drums on anything and practice virutally everywhere, without a beat a piece of music is pretty much nothing, you can experiment a lot with different beats

Cons: more or less expensive to start, at least if you want a whole set, finding a practice room that neighbors wont complain about due to noise, gotta have the rythm

As for myself I always particularly enjoyed playing the drums. I got a natural feel for beats - that helps a lot. On the drums you can just hammer away and easily learn by doing.

Definitely Piano. Aside from the guitar, the piano is the most versatile instrument. And it just sounds good. But, that may not fit in with your style of music.

I would learn to play the harmonica there are so few rock musicians who play the harmonica.

    It would rock!

yeah, I would learn the piano. It is so versatile, and helps with writting music, with the piano you can then play an organ, harpsichord, etc.
