What do I do with this fish?
I have a four lined pictus cat fish about six inches long. I bought him 10 years ago as a gift for my ex who had a 75 gallon tank full of Cichlids. When he moved out, he put all the fish into buckets and this one was accidentally left behind; we found this nasty scummy bucket in the garage with a miraculously still alive fish in it. I called him and told him to come get his fish, but he never did. 10 years later the poor beast is still living all alone in a 20 gallon tank. We tried to put him in with my mom's fish, but he ate them all. He's very aggressive. He even ate 10 inch pleco. So he's all alone. I tried to give him to the pet store, but they don't want him because he's too aggressive. I even thought in passing of setting him loose in our pond, but I don't think that's a good idea. I have no interest in eating him, btw... I don't know what to do with this fish. I've never wanted him, and his tank takes up alot of space I could be using. I don't even like fish. Any suggestions?

An easy way to do this that's not very invasive to you is to run a short ad in a smaller newspaper or to make some flyers to post at your local grocery store and Walmart. Just have some flyers with you and when you go shopping post one. Using FREE in big letters gets a lot of attention. You won't need to spend a lot of money doing this...It shouldn't cost you more than ten bucks. If you sell the tank too then you'll at least make your money back and be done with your fish problem. I wouldn't mess with an internet add unless you live in a city and can get results and then only do it if it's free. If you live further away from city then the first option that I gave you is the best because people won't want to go very far for a cheap fish they can get locally so an internet add would probably be moot anyways.
As a very last resort releasing him into a pond should be fine. It sounds like he can take care of himself! :) Good luck....

You should be able to find a small petstore to give it to, even if it is a semi aggressive fish, at least where im from i can think of several differant places that would take him. I wouldnt tell them his aggression level, if you think it is that bad, maybe some of the employees that dont know any better are making a desicion based on what u are saying. I actually have a 2 four line pictus and a spotted pictus cat, there are fish he can live with, its just finding the right size and species. Do not put pictus in pond, ....... worst case seniro.......... get that bucket back out put the fish in it and go to a local petstore, and drop it off. They will take it. I know at my place of work which happens to be a petstore, i have inherited many fish this way, actually many pets. lol.

Like some other folks said, I would probably try giving him away first, through freecycle, craigslist, or putting up flyers at the grocery store. And if that doesn't work, you could always release him into the wild, a pond or lake nearby (put him in a cooler or bucket with a lid, for transport). It really does sound like he can handle himself pretty well in any situation.

Put the fish in a bucket. Walk into a petstore set it down and then walk out. Quickly. Problem solved, and it's not like they would let him die in a bucket.
Yah, it's a little shady. Oh well. I'm over it.

you could put him on that packet thing that's like can PennySavers or something. my parents put in an ad once when they wanted to get rid of this pool table. you can say that it's for free if you really don't want it(you might get rid of it faster that way), and if somebody calls, then i guess that you arrange a meeting with them and then you give the fish to the person.

if you dont want him and no one else does u could put him in a pond but he may just last the season. if u dont care either way the most humain way is put it down by putting him in a ziplock bag then in the freezer this part sucks but its beter then flushing him alive

putting him in the freezer isnt very humane. search koko's gold fish and it will have a place on humanely putting them down. like someone said, try selling him at a yardsale or even put him on ebay. You can also put him in your local animal shelter. You can do that at my local one , and you can put any animal in there.

Your fish sounds like a super fish. Take him to Hollywood. You could make him a star!

Go to www.freecycle.org
they have them for most communities.. people post tons of stuff they they want or want to give away for free.. I bet you could find a good home that way.. just make sure it is someone who wants him :)
