what is the best oil for a 5.5 horsepower gasoline lawn mower?
mine just stopped for no apparent reason yesterday, and I couldn't get it to start again. It's gas tank was full, and I was holding down the safety bar. The only thing I can think of is that the oil was low, but I don't know what kind (weight) of oil to put in it.
it takes plain old 87 octane gasoline.

First check the oil.... if its really low, (not in the safe zone of the cross hatch on the dipstick) then a seized engine is a possibility..... unless it has a low oil sensor that cuts the engine off when it gets too low, then you should be ok.
Use a name brand! (don't be cheap, cheap is not how you take care of em) HD-30 weight above 40 degrees F. Thats a HIGH DETERGENT straight 30 wieght. DO NOT use ND-30(non detergent)
use 5w-30 or 10w-30 conventional below 40 degrees, or use a 5w-30 or 10w-30 synthetic all year round.

Most gas mowers take straight 30 weight or SAE 30 as it's known. However your mower could be different.
