Why French people don't speak in English?

Even French people know that person who can't speak in French, why they don't speak in English? Why they have this personality? What make them so proud of themselve? Or their characters are meant and impolite?

Update:

First I would like to say I am not American and my mother language is not Enlgish. I have this question is because if a French people go to China, they would not expect most of Chinese can speak in French, wouldn't they? But they still speak in French. Except they can't speak in International language, English, what is the purpose if they can speak in Enlgish?

To sigma_nu_texas:

Yes, my english is not good or what you said atrocious but at least I tried to speak in English with other forigners and not speak in cantonese to them first for checking they know cantonese or not. Language is for communication and it's not for showing off.

I'm French, so I can answer your question!!! Most people don't talk to you in English because they CAN'T speak English! If you go to Paris, you might find it easier to find people who can speak English (tourist info centre, hotels, restaurants, etc...).

Actually, I read somewhere that French people who can speak English tend to want to practise so that, even when you can speak a little bit in French, they insist on speaking English!

That being said, it would be nice if tourists made the effort of learning a few basic sentences such as: "hello". "Excuse me", etc...

However, I just read a report made by a French guy which said that the France was considered the least friendly place when going on holiday! The thing is, the French tend not to be that friendly with their own people, above all in big cities. It's not impolite. It's just the way it is. But I agree, it's annoying.

National Pride. However, if people took a little effort to speak some French, then you will find that most will speak back to you in French. After all it is a beautiful language is it not?

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. English people are just as bad though. - Say, for example, an English person goes to spain and can only speak English, they expect everyone else to speak English and they won't even try to learn the native language of the country they are in.
