    Truthfully, he only wanted to make the original Star Wars movie. Then when it was the most popular of the movies that came out in that time, He decided to make another one with a plot twist ("Luke I am you Father!"). Then when they were both supposedly the best films around, He made another film with another plot twist (Leia is Luke's sister!). Then when everyone loved the films very much, He decided to make three more movies of Star Wars (not meaning to go backwards) to make the trilogy make more sense to people and also to get more money. And that's the true story of the Star Wars Saga.

    He did not know that the popularity would be so great and had to sell the Idea to the Movie industry to be able to make his movie so he started with the one that had the best story. it is the classic wizard apprentice theme from king Arthur

    because;

    -he thought about the old 3 movies first ,then when he saw what big succes they have made the oder ones

    -or,because he thought since the start that episode 4,5,6 are greater than episode 1,2,3 and put them first.

    I read an interview where he said he named it episode 4 because it sounded cool.

    Go figure. It worked for him, he's insanely rich!

    I think it's because he wanted it to be a surprise when we find out that Darth Vader is Luke's father.

    I don't think he antisipated such popularity. Later on he thought he could earn a few bucks more...

    A New Hope was more marketable. He could hook people better with it.

    because if episode one had been the first i doubt two would never have been made...boring
