It's more than normal, it is the best thing for them. Actually, in today's society, it seems that too many parents use the TV as a babysitter. When children spend their developing years in front of the TV, it stifles their imagination, reasoning, and decision-making skills. Unfortunately, many times it is because a single parent has no other choice. After working hard all day and trying to get things done around the house, the TV is a quick and easy solution. It certainly makes raising your children right a challenge. But, if you have a little creativity, parents can do alot to help their children reduce their TV usage. See the website below for some neat ideas.

Yes it's perfectly normal. Children should be doing other things than watching TV at that age.. Or any age for that matter.
Children need interaction and I think that too many parents turn on the TV to distract their children so they can do other things while they are distracted. I do not think a 2 year old is going to learn anything useful from TV. Matter fact, I don't think that most children learn anything useful from TV. Heh.

It's not recommended that children watch any TV before they are 2. That's why there was so much backlash when they introduced the Baby Einstein series. Now they also have the Sesame Street version for babies. TV is not good for kids, and the longer she keeps her daughter away from it, the better.
At different points in time, we have had no television for years at a time. Didn't miss it at all after about the first week.

It's not "normal" in that most parents let their kids start watching television as sson as they can see it, but "normal" isn't always what's "best". TV isn't beneficial to kids, and could quite possibly be harmful, so your friend is probably doing the best she can for her daughter.
Don't knock her parenting choices. They're hers to make.

Your friend is a freak!! ( But yes she is doing the best for the kid.) Most parents put their kid in front of the TV for down time to themself. She is the most unselfish parent ever. And probably going CRAZY because of it.
