Which one is the worst for your body??

I am in college and there are some girls laying out in the middle of the sidewalk behind my dorm, and they have been there for hours now. What I want to know is which is worse: laying outside for 4-5 hours at a time, or being in a tanning bed that has new bulbs for 20-25 minutes? At that rate, I wonder how long it will take for a person to get skin cancer. The girls lay out like every day for at least 4 or 5 hours. I'm pretty sure they're not wearing any sunscreen.

Update:

I'm just curious as to what you guys think about this topic...I personally don't tan as I am extremely fair skinned (redhead). All I do is burn, so I figured "what's the point" years ago.

Update 2:

While I would LOVE to throw the water balloon, I live on the 4th floor and our windows only open about 5 inches high, and the screens are permanant...we can't take them off the window!! :(

Update 3:

No, I'm not "just jealous". I have perfect creamy white skin with no scars, marks, or blemishes. Does it sound like I'm jealous? I'm gonna have to say NO.

Both are bad. If they think they look cute now they wont when they are older. And they will look older alot quicker than you. While you will still nice smooth skin those girls are going to have skin that resembles cow hide and wrinkled. I guess you could say that college obviously isn't helping them in the brains department to well. After they have been out there for awhile fill up a water balloon with some ice water and throw it at them. Just make sure no one sees you throw it. You might as well get a laugh while helping them to get out of the sun.

None of it is good for you and you're doing the right thing staying out of the sun. A tan might look great today, but 25 years from now, you'll look like a prune, not to mention might have skin cancer. I heard a famous doctor on TV once say that the miracle drug for anti-aging of the skin was SUNSCREEN!!! Just think how these gals will look in a few years. It won't be pretty.

I don't think you should tan at all. If you have fair skin you should try to keep it. It is often very difficult. It is because you have less melanoma in your skin.

As to your question: It really depends on the forecast. The more UV the worst the condition. UV light causes Thymine Dimers. That is when the Ts (Thymine) attaches to each other as opposed to the As (adenine). The longer the duration of the exposure the more Thymine Dimers that occur. Thymine Dimers do repair themselves with time once removed from the UV source if the damage is not too severe.

On a side note. If you're free, I would love to take you out to dinner and take your mind off your tanned neighbors. You should be appreciated for your red hair and light skin.

i think staying out in the sun has more damage than a tanning bed does. The sun has a lot of more UV rays than a tanning bed does, I think. Especially, if the girls are not using sunscreen, I think that is way worst on your body than a tanning bed. But, a tanning bed can be just as dangerous, but I don't see a problem with it as long as you don't lay in the bed every day; it is a little better than sunlight rays.

I think both are bad also. Just think what would happen to a peice of meat if it was out in the sun for 4-5 hours or in that tanning bed for that 20-25 minutes. it would not be lokking to good!

I would think the tanning bed is worse because the radiation is more concentrated. Both are bad, really.

Both are bad. Over time they might develop skin cancer.

Either way they'l get premature wrinkles. You won't be able to convince them though because when we are young, we cannot envisage having mature skin.x

Depends if they are in danger of being burnt. Are you sure you're not just jealous?
