Do you know where I can find info on the history of Christianity?

I'm looking for a book, or even a website, about the history of the Christian churches. What I want is more of the history than the religious aspect of it. Basically I'm looking for when/why the split occurred between Rome and Orthodoxy, and Catholic and Protestant, etc.

Update:

Since all Christianity is based on the Bible, and I'm looking for history on what happened after Christianiyt was established, "The Bible" isn't exactly going to help me.

I know there are some excellent websites on the subject b/c I have visited them before, but I am unable to recall them right now and did not save the sites. However, the following may help narrow your search. The protestant reformation (the split from catholisism) was the result of the actions of Martin Luther who felt that all should have access to the Holy Bible. Prior to that time only the church had access to the scriptures and one had to attend church to hear them read by priests. Include Martin Luther in your search as well as history, christianity, etc. I will do a quick check and see if I can find some of the sites I've visited and get back to you if I find anything.

Also, add Constantine in your search. Constantine was the Roman Emporer who embraced christianity. His rule over the Roman Empire mark the beginning of the Holy Roman Church. In addition, the Histories of Josephus (the Jewish historian) will give great insight into early christianity and Jewish history. Since Josephus is a secular historian, his writings are unbiased and objective. He is often used by biblical historians as a reference to church history.

    I ran "schisms" in search

    here excerpt from NEW ADVENT

    quote

From the time of Diotrephes (3 John 1:9-10) there have been continual schisms, of which the greater number were in the East. Arianism produced a huge schism; the Nestorian and Monophysite schisms still last. However, the Eastern Schism always means that most deplorable quarrel of which the final result is the separation of the vast majority of Eastern Christians from union with the Catholic Church, the schism that produced the separated, so-called "Orthodox" Church

do you want the truth or the fictional version

in the biggest secret ,by David Icke ,you can find some aspects and versions of the truth,

and on the history channels in all of the documentaries such as ancient warriors ,or the most evil man and women ,or in BBC horizon are many mentions of Christianity and what was happening at that the time of that episode

the Bible deals with the latter

Google or Wikipedia...also there is a book by a SDA founder called the Great Controversy or The Conflict of the Ages (Ellen G White), you can find copies in any thrift store..they've been around for decades...that has a pretty good grasp of the history of the church. Love in Christ, ~J~ <><

Encyclopedia searches are going to be your best bet - The Holy Roman Empire, The Byzantine Empire, The Crusades, The Origins of Catholicism, Encyclopedia of Religious Origins

hope these give you some guidelines to get you started. It's a great study and you'll be amazed at all you learn.

You might check out christiancourses.com - they are free

Not sure about Roman/orthodox, but Catholic and Protestant was a guy named Martin Luther in Germany. Try "Evangelisch" as a keyword. Might get a lot of Martin luther King stuff if you use that Keyword. Also see Lutheran churches aroud here, so you might find something there.

    Good luck

OH. might also want to try Guttenberg, the inventor of printing, think he also had something to do with it.

Source(s): German, learned about that in school. Religion is a subject there, two main churches during my childhood catholic and evangelic

If you look it up, the split with the Catholic Church and the orthodox Church officially occurred in the 1054. They had been drifting apart but it occurred in that year. Protestism started with Martin Luther in 1521.

Try Wikipedia.com. It's an interactive, and very user-friendly encyclopedia on line. It incorporates info from everywhere, in a very useable format.

I think if you just google "Christianity" or the history of... you'll get wayyyyyy too much information.

It's worth a try. I've found it very helpful in getting info on specific aspects of larger issues.

(And ps. If you're able to find answers?? Let ME know!! lol)
