How do you know it's time to switch nipple sizes?

My son's been using slow flow nipples since birth, he's 8 months old now but still tiny (about 12 lbs)- should I switch to medium flow?

Update:

He's growing fine, following the growth curve almost excactly- he started out 3 lbs 9 oz.

They become irritable with their bottle, i found. I waited (particularly with my first, since it really didn't occur to me to switch the nipple for age) until she seemed to be frustrated with the bottle, then i tried the larger nipples and voila - she was happy again.

With my second, she was so little and she seemed more prone to gag anyway, so I did the same thing with her.

if u switch to a nedium of fast flow nipple he will get more milk to drink and he'll put on more weight cause he may give up if u dont switch cause babys dont like to have to try to suck for all thay are worth just to get milk... i have a 13 minth old and he is only 18.5lbs and a 10day old thats 7lbs 15 ounces

Honestly - your son will tell you when it's time. If he's struggling to get the formula out of the bottle or seems frustrated, it might be time to switch. Nobody can tell you what's right for your baby but your baby and your doctor!

That's awfully small. Talk to his pediatrician, it doesn't sound like he is growing at an appropriate rate. Yes it is probably time to increase the nipple size as long as he doesn't choke.

How many weeks was he when he was born? you have to remmber to do the age ajustment to see if he is on track ....

my son is 2 on sept. 16th ...

    he weight only 22pounds EVEN...

Swicth means he has not even trippled his brith weight of

    7 pounds 9.5 ounces...

To triple his brith weight he would have to weight 22lbs. 12.5 ounces...

    each baby is diffrent ....

personly i would change to the mediun flow see how he dus after a few feedings ( at frist they seen like they are sucking to fast the baby will learn how hard to suck)

bottom line listen to you doctor

sounds like high time you switched. If you're not sure, it doesn't hurt to try. See if he looks releived or excited or has more energy afterwards. At that age, it's doubtful he'll have a FATAL choking episode.

there is an easy way to tell if ready if you move up to next size and he is gagging on milk then he is not ready to be moved up to the next size have to give it a try though he will let u know if he is ready :)

Is he putting on weight? Is he desperately sucking? Does he seem to be taking on extra air? All factors to be considered.
