How do you respond when people say...?

..have a nice day?

I usually say..."Don't tell me what to do."

Update:

I'm sorry, was the little smiley face not there that indicated I was being sarcastic??? Come on people, try not to be so serious....

Update 2:

My point was, people jsut say things without any actual feeling behind it.. bless you, thank you, have a nice day, it all becomes condescending after a while...think outside of the "politeness box " for a second and realize that the bank teller doesn't give a rats *** if you have a nice day or not, she jsut doesnt want to touch the money that is all sweaty from being in your pocket....

There is a Flypside to this question.

I do understand what you mean when you say that people say things by rote.

There are scores of people out there that do just exactly that.

Seems that most people have a tendency to forget their basic moral obligations and just give out the programmed responses.

You can tell the actors in this play by the way they answer, sort of an offhand disinterested tone to their voices. I personally think that this is a reflection of their personalities. Though i am sure this is not true in all cases.

I catch myself doing just the same when I am rushed for time.

there are SOME people, like myself, that do mean the polite sentiments we express often.

By responding "Don't tell me what to do", you seem to be politely checking to see if they are genuine. Props to ya..!

By the tone of your question, I would say you have a bubbly, offbeat and very confrontational(in a good way) type of personality.

Wanna make somethin' of it?! ;]

    Huh, HUh?!

Source(s): Oh....Have A Nice Day...or it will have you. Peace, Love and Harmony to you and yours.

That's hilarious! I am going to try that one the next time someone tells me to have a nice day. I usually just say "Thanks, you too." But your "don't tell me what to do" sounds like more fun.

I like how when at the check out a store and they ask "did you find everything you were looking for?" Even if you say no they just say okay and ring ya thru anyway so why do they bother asking? Part of the job description I guess.

Oh yeah "Have a nice day!"

I think anyone who says that is extremely mean and stingy with their 'well' wishing! Don't you think? I mean, what's wrong with saying have a fantastic day! Or have an absolutely wonderful day! Why does it have to be...nice? Jeez! Nice is just---nice! It's dull and boring, unexciting and possibly uneventful! It's almost as bad as "okay"! I think anyone who says "have a nice day" should be sentenced to "Say Have a Fantastic, Absolutely Wonderful Day" community service!! Join me in my plight! It is time for change!!!

In all honesty will are held accountable for what we do and not for what others do. If someone says to you have a nice day and they did not mean it it is on them not you. I would just be careful to mean what i say and say what I feel. "Thank You, you have a better one"

    That's definitely not cliché!

edit: lol I knew you were being sarcastic.

and you're probably right, but if we all start being honest, this world would be so horrible because everyone would be mean. you know? lol

    have a nice day.

I am happy that they are wishing me a nice day and usually say, "Thank you, and you have one, too!" with a smile.

I'm ususally the one saying have a nice day.

It all depends on my mood. I think you are right to be annoyed by it as it is said so often in a tone of voice that translates to: "I am done with you-next!"

I wonder why people don't say "Have a wonderful day" or "Have an eventful day" or something else, have a nice day is so overused
