Ecw was a wrestling promotion (originally Eastern Championship Wrestling) based out of philly. they ran in to some hard times and hired Paul Heyman to turn things around. He re-christend ECW as Extreme Championship Wrestling. They were more of a cult wrestling promotion with the most hardcore fans in the business. In 2001 paul heyman took his ECW to vince mcmahon and begged vince to help. Vince helped by buying ECW and killing it in a matter of months with a failed ECW/WCW invasion of the WWF (as it was then). Vince having acquired WCW around the same time.

Most of the WCW and ECW wrestlers were hired by vince to work his WWE shows. This lead to an oversized roster of talent hence the brand split (Smackdown wrestlers and Raw wrestlers). Vince had also hired Paul Heyman as a writer for smackdown. Stephanie Mcmahon vetoed the ide3a as she didnt like Heyman so Heyman was given medial tasks within WWE.

In early 2005 Heyman approached Vince with an Ideaof a one ECW pay per view (one night stand). This took place and fans were picking up on the popularity of ECW once again. The show was a roaring success and lead Vince to start plaining a Second ECW show for June 2006. Again tickets sold out in minutes and fans were clamouring for more ECW. Vince met with Paul Heyman to discuss the possibility of re launching ECW full time.

This has of course already happenecd with the new ECW debuting on the SCI-FI network on June 13th.

The thinking within WWE management is that his WWE audience are not "up" on ECW product. Thus they had Kurt Angle and Big Show work for ECW (it should be pointed out that although these wrestlers, like all the other ECW wrestlers work under the ECW banner, they are contracted to WWE inc.) the thinking behind this was that the WWE fans would staryt to have an interest in ECW. This is also the reason for ECW showing up on RAW and vice versa.

Mr. McMahon decided to re-launch the new ECW globally. Although there are hardcore loyal fans who still support ECW, many still has no idea of it. I mean, how can a small time wrestling promotion beat a multimedia giant like WWE?

The answer is, it can't, which is why Vince promoted it as a 'brand', although Heyman doesn't emphasize too much on the fact that they are just a brand. Since TNA is starting to create a buzz, Vince needed something to cause a stir. So he decided to let Raw and ECW do battle, while he rakes in the profit!

ECW is a brand that is owned by the WWE. The only reason Vince brought it back is because TNA's pay-per-views were outselling the WWE's pay-per-views. For this reason, now the WWE has 3 brands to fight back with. The whole Big Show thing, Paul Heyman offered the deal to him. Big Show accepted because Big Show wanted some extreme wrestling. You can go to www.ecw.com and find a video on why he left the WWE for ECW.

There is proof that ECW is owned by the WWE, because if you go to www.ecw.com, it is exactly the same website as the link www.wwe.com/shows/ecw.

    I hope I answered your question. :-) :-)

ECW is like a secondary unit (Expansion of business for the BOSS) of the wrestling industry

E C W, is to be the most extreme type of wrestling, the wrestler can use anything to fight with, on Raw, or WWE, they have different rules, that are separate from ECW.

    That is my understanding.

Vince owns all the major wrestling titles. I think he realized having a nemesis is more financially beneficial. So he split WWE to gain more revenue. All about the money.
