Here a card, there a card, everywhere a red card.?
The refs have put in, if anything, a brave and entertaining performance. Personally, I think some of them are just embarrasments to the federation. The U.S. had unjustified red cards plus a penalty kick, Tunisia had an unjustified penalty kick, (both those penalties were game-winning goals in important games), today the Portugal-Netherlands match was very out-of-control. Have they been that bad? Is this average? What do you think? Thanks.
Good point, Kengoward. I forgot to add that in that match, Simunic was shown three yellows and a red. Quite impressive.

It is my understanding that the refs are under pressure by FIFA to call the matches more strictly. However, I think they've gone a little too far this year!
It is evident to me that many bookings (yellow and red cards) have been given out of fear of losing control of the games. To my mind, any referee who fears losing control of a match shouldn't be out there in the first place.
The practice has always been to call the players involved in a foul together and warn them verbally before issuing any cards. Sometimes the official may call the team captains together and talk to them. Either way, you don't come right out of the gates flashing yellow cards at the first players to commit a foul.
You are right in saying the refs have been bad. This is not average at all. I'm disappointed to see so many games limited to 11 vs. 10, 10 vs. 10 or even 9 vs. 9 (Holland-Portugal), just because a referee fears losing control of the match.
I think we've probably seen yet another World Cup record set in the number of yellow and red cards given. Personally, it's not the kind of record I want to see broken ever again! Ironically the very control the referees have tried to affect through all the bookings has backfired on them!
Anyway, that's my two cents.

Yes. Especially Graham Poll. He needs to never officiate again. 2 Yellows=an ejection. Nope. 3 Yellows at Full Time=Good Job Poll. That was the worst officiated game ever. Croatia vs. Australia 2006 will be a video along with the Netherlands v. Portugal game on how NOT to officiate the World Cup.

this world cup averaged 5 yellows a game -this world cup is tied for the most red cards ever-and we still have half of the tournament left. So in the Port.-Neth. game there were 3 to 4 times as many cards as average.
