On vacation....1999 dodge caravan why did the serpantine belt fall off?

Are there any others out there that have gone thru a mud puddle the serpantine belt fall off? I swear....this has got to be a design flaw of the 1999 dodge caravan! Try looking for a diagram to put the stupid thing back on and you're stuck in a place on 4th of July and find someone to put the sucker back on.

I am now convinced that tomorrow if I make it home from this ordeal This van will be traded in for something new!!!

A lot of factors here. 1 Is the splash guard under the vehicle in place? 2 Is the belt in good condition? 3 Is the belt tensioner working properly?. Bottom line you need to take it to a shop and have it checked out so it does not happen again. As a long time Chrysler mechanic tho what generally causes this is a bad belt tensioner. Good luck.

Look under the hood for a diagram. Maybe when you went through the puddle, something hit the belt and knocked it off. If their isn't a diagram under the hood, look around, I am sure that their is about a million other one out there.

  • i see it a lot on the caravans and voyagers all thou a tencioneer can cause this it is usually the water that splashes onto the belt that causes it to slip and fall off they do have an updated splash shield but the best option avoid puddles

there should be a belt routing diagram sticker under the hood. as to why it came off, it might be stretched beyond design limits or the tensioner assembly may need replacing. there are auto parts stores open today that can help you.
