What do you know about Fort Drum, NY?

My son & daughter in law, & 2 of the cutest granddaughters- 2yrs old & 2 months old have been transferred there. He will be leaving for Afghanistan soon with his troop. He is Lt. so they have a nice house but how will my girls be alone? I am worried about them.

Parks? Weather? People? You know the questions I worry about. Going up in 1-1/2 moths but are they okay? Thanks!!

Update:

Fort Drum is a military base thant my son a Lt & US Ranger in Army fave just been stationed at. He is deploying to Afghanistan & leaving his new familt there. The daughters are 3 months & 2yrs. so I worry what base & area are like. He has been put in for elite guard of Unknown Soldier in Washington DC. (he was one of 12% to get through Ranger Scool 1st try.) - they do not shoot at Unknown Soldier guard but tough procedures & lots that want job.

Update 2:

Thanks for other answers - I feel better - they both graduated from university in mountains so they are used to cold - love to ski, snow hike, skate & etc.

Fort Drum is very nice. It is close to the 1,000 island area, which is absolutely gorgeous. The people are extremely friendly and laid-back there. Unfortunately, the winters are bone-chillingly cold. I mean like arctic cold! The town Alexandia Bay is wonderful place in the summer, though. Lots of boating and river-front cafes and restaurants.

No need to worry. Ft. Drum is a one of the most beautiful places in the world that I had the privilege to serve when I was in the Army.

There are plenty of parks on base as well as in the surrounding areas.

Water town is a great little town with friendly people and plenty of entertainment.

The weather in extreme up state New York is a little chilly in the winter but not any more so than a lot of other places in the northern United States. Lots of snow. Bundle up!

I want to thank both you and your son. You for raising a fine young man that chose to serve his country. And that fine young man himself for his dedication to his country and his troops.

They'll have a better relationship in New York because statistically speaking there's less divorce in blue states than red states and their separation will put a strain on their marriage, so they'll be better off in that blue state.

What does this have to do with the military?I worry about my daughters also but this has nothing to do with the military.
