Ant behavior with bait traps?

I'm trying to kill ants with Terro bait liquid (syrup with borax). How come the ants swarm the bait for one day and then disappear for a couple of days? Then they swarm again.

On the days they disappear, are they eating their dead? Or are they searching for non-sweet food? Or has another nest replaced the first poisoned one?

Have you tried setting a bait *without* the poison? It may just be normal behavior for ants; bait without poison will show you how they normally act.
