Lake Tahoe - beautiful, trails to hike, casinos, cruises on the lake. South Lake Tahoe has a great Indian restaurant called Taj Mahal.
Ft. Bragg (coastal city) - small town, but they have a really neat glass beach
Mt. Shasta - pretty, nice shops, Mike & Tony's Italian restaurant is great!
Sacramento - old-town has tons of unique shops and restaurants. Fat City Grill is really good.
Redding - close to lots of outdoorsy stuff like hiking, lakes, mt. biking, canoeing, etc. But it's really hot. One of my favorite restaurants is C.R. Gibbs.
I'm not much for the party scene, so if that's what you're looking for - sorry I'm not much help.

Inverness is really wonderful. You can go down multiple steps to a lighthouse with wildflowers and lichen growing all around. Manka's is a very relaxing place to stay with awesome food. You get the coastal breezes along with a charming community, some quaint shops. Manka's can be expensive, but there are several inexpensive motels and some b&bs. Also, it isn't far from San Francisco, so you don't have to spend the entire weekend driving.
Enjoy

I would explore the Gold Country. Angels Camp, Sonora, Columbia, Pinecrest is very nice in the summer. Pinecrest is east of Twain Harte via Hwy 108.
Murphy's has some great wineneries and loads of small shops to visit.

Mt. Shasta is a very nice, relaxing place to go. Very natural. You could also go up to S. Lake Tahoe. It's a beautiful drive; great time for some good conversation. Anywhere along the coast is good.

Go further up to Mendocino, nice and quiet.
Enjoy good food at the coast, antiques and a laid back live.
