Why are tennis shoes called tennis shoes?

They were originally the shoes one wore when playing tennis. There weren't always all the high tech designs that are out today.

I know what you mean by all the different names for casual shoes worn when playing sports. It is confusing isn't it?

I think that the game of tennis was invented by a man named the same and he was the first one to have a tennis shoe made and it kind of went from that point.

Now we have too many high dollar tenny runners in my opinion and when they cost over 300 dollars a pair I would prefer we refer to them as my good shoes, period.

Maybe its not what tennis has to do with shoes, but what shoes have to do with tennis. Think about that one.

They are called sneakers, not tennis shoes. Tennis shoes is just stupid. Barely anyone plays tennis, so why do Americans call everyday sneakers tennis shoes???

Everybody used to wear leather shoes and then vinyl shoes and then leather shoes again. Somewhere way- back- when, tennis was not fun to play in leather shoes, so they invented shoes made of canvas with rubber soles.

tennis shoes cannot be used for baseball or football. Sneakers are not called tennis shoes. Tennis shoes have their seperate entity. Just like basketball shoes volley ball shoes and so forth.

You can ask why are basketball shoes called baseketball shoes if they can be used for tennis, running, volleybay, and golf. They all have shoes for specific sports.
