What kind of gift would you give an newly married couple who did not have a wedding celebration?

I know two couples in this situation who recently tied the knot and did not have a celebration. One couple is in their mid 20's ( the woman is a former coworker) and the other couple is in their late 30's(this woman stood up in my wedding). Household items are not needed.

I am looking to give a nice gift around $30-50 as no one is expecting a gift. I am trying to pick something nice and all I could think of is a fancy picnic basket or something along those lines.

Any ideas?

Update:

The only other thing I can think of is a gift card to their favorite resturant.

I have been in the same situation - the gift I usually use is a basket with a nice bottle of wine (or 2), a couple of wine glasses, candles and candle holders. It's romantic, tasteful and thoughtful. (unless they're alcoholics).

You can use a themed basket of food, too - like pasta, expensive pasta sauce, dishes, etc. if you don't like the alcohol theme.

They will both enjoy something they can use together.

I don't like to give gift cards because I don't think they are personal enough and they put a dollar amount on friendship. I'd give a nice bottle of Bubbly - Schramsberg Brut Rose, Blanc De Noirs, Cremant, or even a nice Reserve and a nice picture frame of some sort.

The picnic basket sounds good... or you could give them some movie tickets in a basket geared to entertainment. Say, with bags of popcorn; a couple of DVDs, some candy.

Whatever their personal interests are, you could gear the gift basket towards that in particular.

Flowers and a personal card are always classy. I also like the giftcard idea - a nice romantic getaway is ideal for married couples. We also considered this when my brother had his baby so they wouldn't have to make dinner. It might especially be nice if they didn't go on a honeymoon?

You could also send a bottle of wine along.

The younger couple might be strapped for cash. You might consider just sending money, but that could be tacky and impersonal considering how well you know them.

If you know their favorite store, give them a gift certificate, or, a gift card. Most stores sell gift cards for a certain dollar amount. I have seen the gift cards at stores such as Rite Aid That way they can buy something they want or need.

Give them the thing all newly married couples need most... money. You don't have to bother with a gift card, just give them a check.

Give them a gift certificate in a pretty card, that way they can decide what they truly need and what is important.

Something that they would both enjoy. Something for their house or a bottle of wine or champagne. Picnic basket sounds nice.
