Western Digital. I'm a computer tech and over the last couple years the failure rate of Maxtor drives has increased considerably. We only use WD now for everything.

I've used both and Iomega as well. For me I'd say the Iomega was definitely the best - never had any problems at all. The others EDD's occasionally freeze when copying or moving large numbers of files (tens of thousands), the Maxtor sometimes has difficulty starting up and needs to be disconnected and reconnected.

    Personal ratings...

    Iomega 10/10

    Western Digital 8/10

    Maxtor 6/10

I made the mistake of buying 2 unbranded EDD's - not a good move and they weren't that much less than the branded ones.

The main concern would be as to how rugged a drive is. It's not really an issue of brand but quality of a particular drive. I've had failures with all of the major brands. Aside from ones designed for the military or those almost-indestructible laptops, one from a server would be best though they're usually SCSI and that's difficult to find in an external enclosure (SCSI support). Otherwise, go for price.

Western Digital hard drives are better known. They are of better quality, and I would trust them a lot better. I would recommend that you get a Western Digital!

WD of the two, however I personally prefer Seagate over either of the ones you listed.
