If it's swollen, then it's probably infected. I would bet that he has a splinter in there or possibly stepped on a nail. If there are other cats in the house, he could have been bitten. When cats swat at each other, their paws sometimes get caught on the other cat's teeth. The best thing to do would be to take him to a vet so he can get a shot. If it abscesses, it could be fatal to your cat. If you can't take him to a vet for whatever reason, try to look at the paw by holding his upper leg (somewhere where it's not swollen). Use a flashlight to look at the paw. See if there's anything stuck in there between the pads. Then try to dunk his paw in hydrogen peroxide 3 or 4 times a day.

It could be many things. Is there blood? Pus? Is it the pad that's swollen or the foot? He could have a broken bone or sprain, insect sting, walked in some kind of poison or irritating substance, abrasion that is infected, or even an electrical shock from something. If it doesn't get well fast, and if it affects his movement or he is in pain, a vet check is in order. Will he let you touch his foot? If not, then it's something serious that is hurting him.

being a cat owner for many years it is obvious he has something in his paw or he wouldnt be licking on it. by doing so he is trying to get what ever out. if not there will be infection. my best advise is to take him to the vet coz they will have the nessarery tools to get it out. and then he will have to have an antibiotic so there wont be an infection.poor lil feller i know it hurts. good luck

Take him to the vet. If he's been declawed it's possible that the claw has begun to grow again under the skin, which would cause serious irritation and swelling.. Imagine having an ingrown toenail that you had to put all of your weight on with every step. Ouch!

well, he could have gotten a toe nail caught on something, like the rug or the couch, or anything really and tore it out, or he could have been bitten by a spider or something like that. Look and see if the toenail is sill there, and then check for any kind of bite marks on it. Be careful, if it is real sore, he might bite you if you hurt him.. If it looks infected treat it and call the vet.

Make sure there is no rubber band around his paw, especially if there are kids in the home.
First thing tomorrow, call the vet.

sounds like maybe he stepped on a sharp object (like a tac or something) put a warm clean cloth on the paw and if green thick looking puss comes out then it is an infected puncture wound

If he hasn't been neutered, actual get that carried out. it may decrease down on the urge to roam, whether it may desire to no longer supply up it thoroughly. Get a cat harness & leash & practice him to bypass exterior on the leash. basically taking him exterior could be very, very risky. whilst you're protecting him & he gets scared or sees something he needs to chase, he could scratch at you to attempt to get down. He could desire to run out into the line, autos & cats do no longer make a reliable combination. He could desire to run away. Cats flow plenty speedier than maximum human beings do.
