What do you think the reaction would have been?

if Derek Jeter had hit a long fly with the bases loaded last night? I believe everyone on all the message boards would have called it the great play ever, the announcers would have hailed his "fundamental play". A-Rod does it, and people yawn.

    The Yankees Blow.

They would have hailed Jeter for "getting the job done" by driving in the run, and talking about how he always seems to do exactly what the team needs at the right time. They'd talk about doing the "little things," and how he's a great team player willing to give up an out in order to get that run.

With Arod, it's more about how he failed on another chance to cash in some runs, and to break the game wide open.

I might be overly cynical, but I really don't think this is too far from the truth.

I can't say I have a lot of sympathy for A-Rod. If you sign the biggest contract in all of professional sports then you better damn well be the best player in all of professional sports, and you better do it on the biggest stage. If A-Rod wanted to be a good player for a good team, he would have signed a good contract. It's pretty simple.

And when you're making that kind of money and not producing, your fans have every right to boo. Keep in mind that he's 1/8 of the Yankees' payroll, and they have the highest payroll BY FAR in all of pro sports. The fans' continued support of their team through ticket sales and merchandise purchasing, etc. pays their salary; in exchange, they want to see their marquee player be a catalyst for a World Series run. They get it from their captain; they don't get it from A-Rod. If the roles were reversed and Jeter made the 25 million dollar contract, I think people would be plenty pleased because they would have a good third baseman and a great shortstop who's making his money out there.

Well A-Rod is the best payed player in baseball, so he has to carry the team on his back, but I think he is over payed, he has more errors than anyother 3rd base men, has hit into more DP this season than any one on the team, It just seems that A-Rod is not made for big scenerios, Jeter on the other hand always seems to come through in the clutch, like friday's HUGE double and Sunday's game tying single, A-Rod did popped out when Abreu was on 3rd and less than 2 outs; and I don't care that 3rd base is not his natural position, or that he has a good numbers compared to anyone else, he has not come through in the clutch this season, and that's why he gets booed.

A-Rod is overpaid, and for the money he gets he should be not only hitting 3 for 3 every night, but also driving in the runs when people are on. Jeter is also, I would say, over rated. Jeter was put on the Yankees at the right time. If you put Jeter on Tamba Bay, he would not have the success he has now.

That's because they pay Jeter to be a team leader, a superior defensive player, and a clutch hitter. A-Rod on the other hand is paid to be a power hitter in all situations. He's fallen short of that in most game winning, score evening, go ahead occasions.

A-Rod should have hit a homer in that situation.

I think people are being unfair to A.Rod, sure he's earning 25million a year and for that alone he should produce...and he is!!! People seem to forget he is a short stop and not a third baseman, plus the pressure of being in New York. He was an amazing short stop (still is i bet), he is a team player willing to play an unknown position to him.

In any other team he'd be supported, but because Jeter is there for him to be compared to he's being unfairly treated.

well right now A-rod isnt that well liked by any baseball fans including yankees fans, so he'll have to earn his way back into fan's hearts. as for the announcers, i saw the yankees game last night and they said a-rod did a good job when he hit tht sac fly, so really its the fans giving A-Rod a hard time.

  • 1 decade ago

Wait a minute, didn't A-Rod have a sac fly last night? I remember hearing the YES announcers saying he got the job done. I can't wait for all this doubting A-Rod to be over.
