I'd say a pediatrician or a regular doctor.

ADHD is diagnosed by having a thorough medical examination. An evaluation by a pediatrician, family doctor, psychologist, or child and adolescent psychiatrist. The three ADHD symptoms are: Inattention- This is the most common symptom. In addition to having difficulty paying attention, people with this symptom often are unable to consistently focus, remember, and organize. Impulsivity- People who frequently act before thinking. Hyperactivity- A hyperactive child may squirm, fidget, and climb or run when it is not appropriate.

It usually is a team of specialists that have experience in the field. There is a 700 point test they go through, it isn't a short, quick method to determine this. They take into consideration information from school (teachers/test scores/grades) and information from the parents, sometimes close friends and relatives too. All of this helps to determine what is going on. A great book on ADD/ADHD is "The ADD Book" written by two doctors who have children that are ADD. The book gives options regarding treatment; behavioral modification, diet, etc. Also, there are great foundations online to help too. I am not a fan of medicating either children or adults unless all else fails. There are some natural tonics out there with good results.

A child's general doctor does not have the necessary training to detect ADHD. That diagnosis, in my opinion, needs to be done by a therapist of some kind.

I know my pediatrician diagnosed it but also wanted her in with a therapist and they work closely together. I am very impressed with the way my daughters case is handled.

Your pediatrician is the only one that can diagnose someone with adhd.
