Does anyone else hate that CGI animation is becoming the norm for animated films?

I mean, I like CGI well enough, but I don't like that it's now being used in every single animated movie. I want them to bring back cel-animation (i.e. hand-drawn), because to me, it's just more...I dunno, artistic and personable. You get to see more of an artist's own style and personality, and it's just more pretty to look at.

Now, I'm not saying we should do away with CGI completely...on the contrary, it's great for a few movies...but I don't think cel should be completely abandoned just because we've suddenly got all this computer technology. I miss cel a lot.

Anyone else agree?

Update:

You're very welcome, f4fantactic. ^_^

Update 2:

cute_teen_matsumi: Just because it takes longer doesn't mean it's better.

People, I'm not suggesting we do away with CGI completely...The Incredibles, for instance, was a very good movie. I just think they should vary it a little between CGI and cel.

Thankfully, John Lasseter of Pixar is now reviving Disney's 2D animation department. Eisner was a little too eager in eliminating it... hell, all it was was the foundation of the studio!

I don't have a Strong opinion about animation being cgi i loved every cgi cartoon Ive seen I'm just really tired of an entire live action filmed movie being cgi they really go overboard with all of it and we will really notice how crappy it all is as time goes by just like special effects that were revolutionary and cool in the 80's look like crap now

I'm old fashioned, so hand drawn is more personable and I "see" where the artist is coming from. CGI in some movies has been quite obvious to spot. Not in all, but some, and I think animation should just be drawn without effects at all.

I do agree with you. I miss the days when cartoons and movie making making required more artistic skill. I do admit that it takes artistic skill to CGI animate also. But all of the computer animated films are starting to look the same to me. They're all about animals that act like people and they all seem to resemble Toy Story a little too closely. They're not clever anymore. And I as an 80's kid I miss the days when fantasy movies required more set buildling and elaborate puppetry like Labyrinth, Dark Crystal. Of course those movies look dated now, but I appreciate them more because they took so much time and effort to create. Nowadays, movie makes computer animate anything that is a challenge.

    F*ck NO!

The Incredibles was an awesome movie.

Follywood should be doing all their super hero movies in CGI instead of those god-awful live action versions.

They could do so much more with CGI.

yes! i love the old hand drawen stuff but in a way the CGI is slowly going to over run it!

I agree. The computer animation is cool, but it doesn't give me the satisfaction I get from watching 2D animation. I'll always prefer 2D to computer animation.
