Writing thank yous after an interview?

I just came from a job interview and I would like to thank the person who interviewed me. What is the best way to do this while still sounding sincere?

    It is a great thing to do - could get you the job. I get their card when I am there and fax them a letter with the cover page and in subject I put thank you or job interview. Set the fax letter up like a real letter though or make your address and phone # as the footer. Or - call the company and ask if that person has a company email - that is even easier. Then you don't have to worry about format. And it is ok to call and say - hi this is Jen and I was just wondering what Nick's company email address is. I met with him this morning and just wanted to send a thank you note etc - that is ok and if you can only contact him that is ok to. Just make sure to get this info at the interview instead of after from now on - maybe you did , I'm not sure.

    You can search online for some examples at several sites like about.com and monster.com - then you will see it so it will be much easier and you can also borrow some things for your own letter.

    Make sure you spell their name right and use Mr. John Smith or Ms. Jennifer Smith - make sure to use Mr. or Ms.

    MS Word has all fax cover pages and may even have this kind of template. I set it up as Dear John Smith: - and then you want to have 3 paragraphs that are single spaced and at the end you want to say Sincerely, space 2 or 4 lines down and then type your name and then you want to sign your name in that empty space. Make sure you don't abbreviate anything and SPELL CHECK over and over again - if you are sending this fax and saying how detail orientated you are - make sure it is perfect!

    Ok~ overall you want to sound confident and say things like this job or position will be... not would be.. that is good - sell yourself and go over things you spoke about in the interview and positive traits that you will bring to the job, Be polite, professional, short and to the point and clear - not too wordy or over the top.

    Sometimes when you search the internet though, thank you letters will come up and I am like - oh my, I would never send something like that - so be you - don't be overconfident and cocky - just real - like I know I can bring this to you and this and this and that I am the ideal candidate for this position and that I would excel in it - not like there is no other choice etc. - so don't use or copy ones that are like that or too cheesy

    1st paragraph - like this. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today about the position for XXXXX. I am very interested in this position and think that I have a lot to offer your company and believe that this position will contribute to my personal and professional growth.

    2nd paragraph - focus on some things you talked about at the interview and how you feel you could accomplish these or what skills you have that you feel you will bring to the position. Make 3 or 4 sentences in this paragraph and don't load up all of this into one sentence:

    **this is also where you will want to search online for what are called "power words" - for resumes and you can use these in the thank you letters as well

    ie: I feel that my strong skill set would allow me to exel in this position. I am very detail-orientated, punctual, hard-working, easy to work with, work well as part of a team, have a strong ability to multi-task (do more than one thing at once) etc

    Sell yourself here - point out allll of the things that are your best traits - that would make them want YOU -.

    Paragraph 3 - sum it up - thank them.

    Thank you again for your time and considertion Ms. Smith (good to say their name again). I am confident that I am the best candidate for this position. If you didn't discuss it or did you can say that as mentioned I have references available upon request or I have references available upon request etc... I look forward to hearing from you when you reach a decision. I am very excited about this opportunity. Please feel free to contact me at the number on my resume or say if it is an email please feel free to contact me at the number listed below. - or restate it in the header if you fax this letter or just type your address and phone under your typed name in an email. - The last liine of this should be something like - I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    **If you get the job - send a thank you for the position letter that also sums up what they offered you and that you look forward to starting work on this day etc.. - These examples are also all over the internet.

    I always send letters and always get the job. It makes you stand out. If you don' t hear within a week or when they told you you can call them to say hi I just wanted to follow up with you regarding your decision.

    AND

    remember - if you are not happy with the salary they offer you - the most crucial time for negotiation is after they offer you it but you haev not yet accepted. Feel free to let them know when they call that you thank them for the offer but that you would l like to consider it and contact them tomorrow with your decision - if you want more money say $22/hr instead of 19/hr - this is when you ask for it and you can send a fax saying thank you for the offer etc but with my skill set and experience I feel that $x would be more reasonable and then ask them to contact you if that can be accomodated- -everytime I have done this it worked - so feel free to do it - just not after you accept - this is when to negotiate anything - a bonus, benefits, vacation, health - etc - after they offer before you accept!

    If this job is a special one that you are really excited about possibly getting, you may want to send him a Thank You card and maybe add the words:

    "Thanks so much for taking the time to interview me for the (blank) position on (blank) date.

    Although you've probably interviewed many qualified candidates, I hope that I was fortunate enough to be have been able to project that little something extra that will leave you confident that I'm the one best suited for this position. The excitement and enthusiasm I have about this job is not a learned skill. I'm told that having it is a gift, and that this gift is helping point me in your direction. It's also one that I'm eager to share with your customers and employees--one that I believe will bring added success to everyone involved.

    I'm eagerly awaiting an opportunity to start contributing.

    Jane Doe"

    If you're not excited about the job. It's just a job. It's just a way to pay the rent. Then just send the Thank You card, include the first paragraph above, and sign it.

    Hope this helps. It's very difficult to write for someone else.

    I've interviewed job applicants before and while there's nothing wrong with thanking somebody for seeing you, it's not really necessary and might be misconstrued as something else (desperation, sucking up, nuisance).

    If I were you, I'd shake the hand of my interviewer, thank them immediately after the interview (when it's most sincere) and skip writing the letter.

    It is a VERY good idea to thank someone for an interview. Best done with a thank you card and written by hand to make it sincere. Keep it short and restate your interest in the position and also remind him/her of one or two reasons you'd be the best candidate for the job. Lastly, make sure you send it right away so that you are still fresh in their minds and before they end the interviewing process.

    It is proper procedure to send a follow-up letter for purposes of thanking (and also making sure the interviewer doesn't forget you). Look up some form letters online to get ideas; you can find a lot of info on this anywhere you find information on resumes. Make sure you letter is professional in appearance and properly formatted. Basically, "Thank you so much for giving me the chance to interview with your firm (company,etc). This job means so much to me and I look forward to working with you. " (Say this regardless of whether or not they have hired you or not...it looks impressive as well as grateful.)

    DON'T SEND A SILLY THANK YOU CARD! TYPE YOUR LETTER ON NORMAL PAPER.

    Within 24 hours of the interview send a thank you letter. You want to thank them for taking time to see you. If their was any one else there make sure to include their name and titles also.

    You want to let them know that your were listening in the interview process by feeding back some of the information they have given you ie. Talk about intrapersonal work relationship if that is one of their perks. Talk about the excellant benefits if that is one of their perks. etc etc.

    Lastly finish of by letting them them know that you have interest in the position and would like to hear from them.

    Obviously this person made you feel comfortable in an otherwise possible stressful situation. Since you know their name, and the work address, you could drop a note to them. I would say in the note something simple like, I appreciate the comfort of the interview, or it is nice to see manners (the definition for which is making everyone around you feel as comfortable as possible) are still alive and well in your office.

    Definately send a thank you... the more a potential employer sees your name, the more likely they are to remember you and to hire you. A personal note thanking an interviewer for their time is not only acceptable, but good manners.
