Why are people so emotionally attached to Pluto being a planet?

Consider how many of them struggled as kids to memorize the names of the planets for some school quiz.

I do not understand why you think many of the people do not understand the reason? A Little self-centered or just better than most? I grew up with Pluto as a planet. I do not care the reason for changing it. I look at it as wrong. Why must a few always change things for the greater, just because they can. Leave somethings alone. In the over all picture dose it matter if Pluto stays a planet. NO! So why change it. Oh by the way I Do understand the reason . That dose not change my mind.

In my opinion, most are just... shocked and awed, to put it in simple terms. Since Pluto's discovery in 1930, we've been taught that there are (or, since yesterday, were) 9 planets in our solar system. For some people, my self included, it's very surreal to have that notion change in simply a day. Especially after that fact that we all believed that the number of planets was actually going to increase to 12 and not decrease to 8.

And for others, they just need to think of something else to relate the number 9 to.

Pluto was named a planet in the 1930s. It is a part of history...practically a monument to early space discovery. Every baby boomer in the world grew up with it. It's sorta like saying the Lincoln memorial isn't a memorial anymore. People are just sentimental about it.

I don't know! What difference if Pluto is a dwarf planet or a planet make in my life? It's interesting, and after that, doesn't mean much to me!

while some people might truly be upset by the latest astronomical "disaster", i get the impression that a fair number were overdramatizing the situation for it's "humorous" overtones. obviously, changing somethings "label/name" doesn't in any way modify what ever it is essentially, and it's "essential effects" upon us and the cosmos. ;-) substance over form, eh?

I don't either. I guess if you are an astronomer, this is very important, but frankly I couldn't care less.

But one thing is now for sure.....Uranus is now at the "butt end" of the solar system.

Because they love the stupid Disney dog and want to see undeserved props for a cartoon.

Pluto was my firend and I dont want him to go!
