Which law Paul is talking about in 1 Corinthians 14:34?

When Paul says:

1 Corinthians 14:34 (New King James Version)

34 Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.

What is the law that he's refering to? It that something from the Talmud? From the law of Moses?

Serious answers, please. Thanks.

I think it was part of the Jewish Law or custom. It is not part of the ten commandment Law. I believe Paul taught them as guidelines to keep down confusion in the church as the husband is supposed to be head over the woman and she is supposed to submit to him in things that are according to the Lord's will. She should not submit to him if he preaches any other doctrine other than the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified. We can read in 1 Corinthians 11-16, about other rules or customs of the Church. Verse 16 says, (But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God. If this bothers us, (I mean the fact that we are suppose to be subject to the male and not speak), we shoud read Galatians 3-28, which says, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If we are offended by thinking that we should keep silent in the church we should read Luke 19-40, also read what comes before it. It says" But He answered and said unto them, " I tell you if these were to keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out."

34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

Paul is talking about women who when they get together in the church start murmuring and chitchatting with each other while the mass or the ceremony is progressing. Also, He is talking about women who when the pastor of the church preaches a certain topic that they couldn't understand, they start asking and questioning each other about the meaning of what the pastor is discussing. There is no prejudice against women, you should know that if you ever read the old testament. Deborah was a great judge for Israel and she performed better than many men at her times. The law is definitely not taken neither from the Talmud or other none biblical references. Paul is taking about the law where man is the head of the women, and if she needs to understand something she couldn't get in the church, then she may ask her husband at home.

Law of the day, mosaic law and the general law of God that says what a good wife should be like. It was the law of the day that women should not speak in the service to ask questions as it would disrupt the service. They did not have access to the scrolls as the men did so they did not know as much of what was in them. The Mosaic law also stated that the women should not be speaking in the service but should let the men do it and they should ask any questions at home. God said in several places that a good wife should serve her husband and treat him with respect. It also says that the husband should treat her as Christ would treat the church. And you thought I was going to bash women!! So it is really from three laws that were prevelant at the time. I do believe today they should be teachers in the church as well as leaders in some things but not to be a Pastor or Elder as that is not right in accordance with the law that God spelled out. An Elder should be the husband of one wife. How can a woman be the husband of a wife? Some things are just not meant to be but it does not mean there are not jobs women can do in the church today.

It is assumed that this referrs to the Law of Moses. Probably refers to Genesis 3:16.

It should be noted that the word for woman and wife in the Greek is the same, making the connection to Genesis 3:16 make even more sense.

Paul was speaking in effect to the church itself. The corithian church was rife with paganism and the women were largely in charge of religion at that time since most pagan religions follow female dieties. What he was saying was to those particular women not women for all time. If you read the bible in toto you will find many influential women who preached the gospel and were leaders in the word. Most people just take this passage out of context. He was asking THOSE women to be quiet so the men could hear as well, since the church was undoubtedly loud and boistrous. The women sat on different sides of the church than the men and paul was telling them to hold their questions until they got home and could discuss them with their husbands.

God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

As in all the congregations of the saints, 34women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

I do not know of any law it is pauls letter to a spacific church where the women were roudy it is not a general comand for all time he was not God

He is talking about Christian Churches. He is addressing the Church in Corinth, which was a Catholic Church. That is why it used to have only men present in the sanctuary and altar area.

Now that modernism has crept into the Church, we have women all over the place. Women have their roles as men have their roles, and these roles were being defined by St. Paul.

Women should not be Lectors at holy Mass. Women should not read the Scriptures aloud to the faithful at Mass. Women should not distribute holy Communion at Mass. Women should not speak at the time of the homily, not even to describe some worthy work of mercy in which they are involved. It is shameful in God's eyes for a woman to have any such role of leadership or teaching at holy Mass and at any time in the Sanctuary.

It also says something about women wearing a head covering in the Church. That is something that was also followed in the Catholic Church with women wearing "mantillas" (veils) on their heads. Again, with modernism in the church, that was done away with.

For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. (For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.) That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels....If any one is disposed to be contentious, we recognize no other practice, nor do the churches of God." (1 Corinthians 11:3-10,16)

It goes on to say : "For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. . . . what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord." (1 Cor 14:37)

It was a carry-over from the Old Testament laws, but it was true in most societies all over the world no matter what religion because women were not "men" and the men because of their strength were able to keep women subdued and pregnant. Unfortunately that still holds true in a lot of the world today.
