Besides Grandma and Grandpa what are some other names you know of that grandparents can be called by?
My husband and I are very excited to have just found out that we will be first-time grandparents in April. Our daughter and son-in-law shared the news on Saturday. My husband and I have been discussing this new stage of our life that we will be entering soon. At 47 and 48, we still feel pretty young plus both my parents and my husband's parents are alive. I also have a living grandma as well - she will be 91 in Sept. So, this baby will be very blessed to have plenty of grandmas and grandpas to love it. We were wondering what were some ideas to help us distinquish which grandma and grandpa is which. We realize, of course, that in due time, this baby will probably develop his/her own way to indicate which grandparent he/she is talking about.

How exciting!!! Congratulations!!!
My son was the first grandchild for all of his grandparents, and he also has living great-grandparents, so we have a little experience on this one!!
The Great-grandparents most likely have names that they have been called, so you can either stick with those if they're unique, or you can add "great" in front of them..... for example, my grandmother was always 'Grammy', but my son calls her 'Great Grammy'.
My mom is a younger grandparent too, and she really liked the idea of the term 'Gram', since it feels casual and contemporary to her.
ON the other side of the family, the names just fell into place... since my son was the first grandchild, he termed his other grandmother 'Moo-ma' and it has stuck for all the other grandkids now!! (goes to show nothing is too out there!) He calls one of his grandpas 'Papa'.
My nephews use formal names to differentiate, because their parents feel that more traditional terms show respect. They call their grandparents 'grandma gloria' or 'grandma mary'.....
You asked a good question!!!
I think the term says alot about how you look at the role of being a grandparent!!! Have fun with it!!!
(other names i've heard: Nonny, Gran, Gram, grammy, Nana, Grandma, Granny, Grams...for guys: Papa, Poppy, Grandpa, Grampy, Gramps,...... hope this helps!!)

My maternal grandmother is called Tootoot (when my brother was little he would sit in the middle of the floor in the kitchen and when she needed to get around him she would say "too-toot" so the name just stuck...but the whole family likes it!) and my grandpa was called Papa. My paternal grandparents are Gran and grandpa.
I always thought Nanna was cute for a grandma :)
Congratulations on being grandparents!

my husbands grandparents we call them granny and bumpas or his other grandparents are nanny and papa. They got those names by how the first grankids could say grandpa or grandma so see how the grandchild tries to say it then stay with it. M friends grandchildren call her lala and her husband papa. So I think u should leave the names u and ur husband are called up to ur grandchild. Good Luck and have fun!

You are right, the child will eventually form it's own name for them, but you can assist. There were already gandma and papa from the other side, so we became mema and pa. I would ask if there are other grandchildren, because you don't want to confuse the issue. They should be called the same thing by all the grandchildren. We have that issue as well and it is very confusing for the children.

I can't help you with your problem, as far as a name for being a grandmother. But, I too was very young when my first grandchild was born, 46. I told my son that I didn' want to be called anything other than PaPa. My wife was so proud to have a grandchild that she chose Grammy.
