Why do people just give the answers in Homework Help instead of just hints?

Personally, I always give an answer with a detailed explanation of how to get to it. A lot of times kids don't know the stuff not because they were too lazy to learn it but b/c their teachers gave them homework before teaching the stuff or were just bad teachers in the first place. My younger sister had a teacher who would always assign math homework about topics they would learn the next day... it was dumb. So she just needed to get through the assignments that night to get a good homework grade, and would learn the things later on. So I think it's okay for us to give homework help as long as we explain what we're doing well. But yeah, I agree that it's bad to just give the answer- and especially because people often calculate wrong or whatever and end up giving wrong answers! Plus, nowadays kids usually have to show work.

Yes, I totally agree with you. They can only truly learn if they are "guided" through the process. To simply provide them with the answer without them going through the steps (with the help of hints) is actually doing them more harm than good. We should motivate them to think more instead of merely handing them the answers. It's really to their own benefit in the long-run.

True. But in some cases you could explain with an concrete examples. But in some cases it really hard to understand the concept that the homework question is asking.

In cases of mathematics you need alot of practice and different examples to totally understand the concept of problem.

You could also give step by step explanation so they could apply in the future. I do agree that giving the answer does not make them think but at least it give them a guideline in going about the problem.

I know as a student when I was younger it was really hard to understand why we do things the way we do. Especially in Mathematics, Science or English.

Knowing the basic structure of sentence does not make you right, it how you apply in its contextual basis. Similiarly you could come up with different ways of solving a mathematic problem.

I totally agree. Its cheating to ask others to do the work for them. There's no other term for it.

I'm a librarian - I am so happy to provide people with research materials to help them, but I am NOT going to do the work for them. I see users posting obvious essay questions and expecting people to write the essay. Or a book report when the asker hasn't even read the book!

The worst are the "repeat offenders" - they post every single one of their homework questions in a row. What are they going to do when its time to take a test? Bring a laptop to class and post it on Yahoo Answers? They are going to be in for a rude awakening.

Sorry, that's my rant - I worked my bacon off in school. I'm really starting to pity a lot of this generation. What happens when they have to start getting jobs and need to get hired by people like us who worked hard at school? Sux to be them.

I think it is very stupid to answer a question without any explanation. But math questions, when answered with a detailed explanation along with the answer can be very helpful, because a lot of people either don't or can't learn the material well enough in a classroom setting... by the way, if you've read screwtape letters, check out my question. :P

because i feel it is out of a sincere feeling of helplessness that they are asking for help and if a hint were sufficient i feel they wouldn't be asking for the help

for example in a problem like add -5a and +8a,what is the possible hint you can give and if that hint were going to help them solve the problem they would not have posted it in the first place and solved it themselves.

well having said that there are those smart enough to get their dirty job done by others.like lawyers bestow absolute faith in their clients we believe the child is sincere and that the help is warranted.

and the class teachers can always find out if they have done their homework with understanding or they have copied it.

properly, If the homeworks due the subsequent day its extra accessible and a lot less stressfull. i encounter If someone provides me the answer i encounter out how that individual were given to the answer so i'm getting to understand it together!

and the rest of you should stop answering them. tell them to do their own homework! they're supposed to be learning. giving them the answers doesn't teach them anything except maybe that if they ask you to do their homework for them, you will. which is a bad thing to teach them.
