Why does the public always have such a hard time believing a celebrity has died?
Do you think we ascribe traits to them that are somehow more than human? I mean, look how many years it's been since Elvis died and there are still so many people who actually believe he's alive somewhere. And now, with this news of Steve Irwin, everyone's first reaction is that it must be a hoax. I just wonder why we react that way.

because we dont want to beliive it. we dont want to imagine the pain and suffering his 4-6 yr old is going to feel when she goes to her father funeral. or his wife lying on their bed at night alone.the human brain trys to push out these horrible thoughts so we dont have to think of all the pain ppl r feeling.

I think sometimes it's because they are so familiar or they are special to us for their work. I mean, I didn't even cry or break down or anything, but I was really, really sad when John Candy died and when John Ritter died, #1 because I enjoyed their work so much, and #2 because they were just absolutely everywhere when I was growing up! Especially John Ritter -he had been on all over television since I was in kinder AT LEAST!
But I admired their creativity and passion.
I think it's just how they touch us through their craft.

I would think that if Steve Irwin had died, they would say something on his website. In his case, the website recognized the many rumors that have been spread about his death and states that he is alive and well.
As far as Elvis is concerned, some people are just stupid.

Mostly because you identify with the person. Sometimes you feel as is if you KNOW them personally. It is like losing a family member or a friend suddenly and you react with shock.

it is a form of denial.... the first reaction in the seven steps of death... or is it five?? anyway, bargaining, depression, denial, anger, acceptance, those are the five steps.. i think there are two more but I am not sure... but to answer your question, that is why we react that way...

when people die unexpectedly, the first step is denial. I don't think that being a celebrity has anything to do with it.
