I talked to a trainer about this and they said once a digger always a digger. You can do things to prevent the dog from digging in certain areas, but they'll just go somewhere else if they have the opportunity.

first their is poop in the hole near the top and cover it. They usually don't go back to it. You could also, go not so great but works, add your urine over the hole. THey will not go over your mark as you are alpha.
Another thing to do is set a side a space in the yard that digging is allowed so it can dig to its hearts pleasure without digging up the whole yard. Just fill it in from time to time and the pup will enjoy it.

Man, I have tried it all!!!! The pepper, tobasco sauce, burying bowling balls,rocks....it does not make a difference. I can for a while, but then they get right back at it!!! Mine dig to bury things, and just for fun. Some of the holes are HUGE!!!
We just gave up and keep filling them in.
Tried the baby pool. Didn't work at all. I am not burying poop all over the yard either. If it stopped them in one place, they would just move on to the next!!!
And do not believe the urine thing...they will mark over yours!!!!
My submissive male will mark right over the dominant male also.
A yard full of poop and pee does not sound better than the holes!!

Hot fence! or electric fence (liner) to discourage getting out of that yard to attack other dogs, cats, etc. or Invisible fence system with collar which is expensive but works very well ! Note this is a digging pet so when the fence is not an option your flowerbeds are probable next target!

I have not tried this yet but my neighbor told me that she got her dog to stop digging by putting a blown up balloon in the hole and then when the dogs goes to dig in the hole the balloon pops and scares it. She said it works.

give him something that is ok to dig in. get a cheap baby pool from walmart or a sandbox and fill it with dirt and let your dog go crazy!
