My Cat Meows all night long! Help I haven't slept in days!?
Ok, so I know cats are nocturnal. I'm aware that they're up all night playing. The problem is that I adopted a spayed femal cat this week, and she is up all night meowing. I'm a grad student so home all day and she gets plenty of attention. However, around 3am she starts meowing, and it doesn't stop! I can't take much more of this, I'm going nuts. I wanted an indoor only cat and the agency I got her through said she was indoor, quiet and cuddly. Well she isn't any of those things. Is this meowing all night long normal? If it doesn't stop, is it wrong of me to take her back to the humane society?
She is spayed. She has food and water available. Also, I can't have more than one pet, it's part of my apartment contract. I would play with her but she wants nothing to do with me. She struggles and even growls when I try to hold her. She won't even sit near me. Occasionally she'll come around for a quick scratch on the head, but other than that she doesn't want anything to do with me. I tried what one person suggested, which is keeping her awake, but that was obviously irritating her and I don't want her to resent me. She moved in with me on Monday, if by Saturday the situation hasn't improved, I'm seriously considering taking her back so she can get a home where they don't mind an independed, illusive cat who meows all night long. Oh, and as for the person who said I should never have another pet, I'd like to inform you that I've had pets my entire life and it's never been an issue.

I don't think it's wrong if you take her back. If the situation isn't working out, they should know....they also might be able to help you in figuring out why she's displaying this behavior.
Our male (whom we've had for 15 months) still does this from time to time, but it doesn't last all night, and we're capable of sleeping through it. Cats meow for such a myriade of reasons, it's hard to pinpoint just one without them being able to tell you what's wrong. I so wish cats could talk....but that would be creepy, lol.
She could be hungry, lonely, irritated, playful....
You're either going to have to learn how to deal with it, or take her back to the HS. They should be able to help you in one way or another.
Also consider how long she's been in your home. If it hasn't been long, just give it some time.
Good luck!

Perhaps she is still adjusting to you and a new environment. Our cats are crate trained-the cage is big enough to hold a covered litter pan and an ottoman with toys strung from the top. When we corral them at night, they know it is bedtime and we don't hear a peep until morning. Of course, they hear the alarm clock and do not appreciate the snooze button, but we sleep thru the night! If she is a good cat, don't give up yet. But if nothing works out, it is better that you take her back than boot her out on the street.

If she hasnt been spayed very long , it may take a bit of time for her hormones to get to normal. Or it is possible she has a urinary infection , cats will meow quit a bit when they do. She may miss her mate.
Since you are home during the day try to keep her up and awake for longer times.get her some toys. if you already have some toys for her, it could be a catnip one that is causing this behaviour as well.
it could be also she doesnt know where you are. when my son goes to school his cat meows for him ALL day.
I would give it a little bit more time, you are new to her and she is in a new envirnoment.

I have a cat that we call the howler monkey.
When we first got her, she cried for the first three nights. I was afraid I'd made a terrible mistake with this cat. Then she was fine. In fact was quite lovable.
She is very close with my youngest. The first time he went to a sleepover, she cried all night. Then she stopped again. Again was the most cuddly cat ever.
A few years later, we moved and she cried for days again. I think the change upset her. Now she's wonderful again.
Give your new cat a few days to adjust to the change.

Try feeding her, she might be hungry. I had the same prob with my kitten, only it's a he. Hope this helps and that you get enough sleep. But what ever ya do DON'T a take her back. You can try a million diff things, but don't take her back. To me it's a little mean.
