Alzheimer's can be hereditary. My family always says that the nuts don't fall far from the trees. Both of my Grandparents have ALZ my aunt is showing symptoms. Dementia can mean so many things such as hearing voices, constant forget fullness. Dimentia is the first symptom of ALZ. I have read in so many places that it's a good idea to keep a journal, do crossword puzzles and collect photos of people you know. These things aid in keeping the mind sharp.

Dementia is usually a disease of old age, though it occasionally occurs in middle age.Six in a hundred people over the age of 65 may develop it,increasing to twenty in a hundred among people over 85.As far as is known, dementia occurs equally across all groups in society.Unlike many other diseases it does not appear to be linked with social class, ethnic group or geographical location. There is no evidence to support that it is hereditary.

Yes, it is hereditary, but it's all very confusing and doesn't mean that you will necessarily get it because it depends if you're mum is a carrier of the certain gene.

depends..............is it vascular i.e. supply of oxygen to brain intermittent or low.

    or Alzheimer's

    or caused by heart medication

my husband has it but it was made very much worse by his heart medication making his thyroid race..........now that is fixed and he has vascular dementia , nobody in his ancestors had it, neither do his brothers.

My father had it and I think I've got it but at times I can't remember if I have it or not.

The chances are slightly greater is one of your parents had it, but that does not mean you will get it.
