I was asleep when the planes hit the towers and the Pentagon, but I woke up around 10 AM and, out of habit, turned on the radio to one of our local stations here in Ottawa, CFRA, a CNN affiliate, to check the news. CFRA had cut to a CNN relay, which they don't usually do unless it's a really big story, and one of CFRA's talk show hosts, Steve Madely, was "hosting" the CNN relay. I learned that the WTC and the Pentagon had been hit...and then Madely said, "Oh my God." The south tower had just fallen.

I went downstairs and found my parents watching CNN. I couldn't believe what was happening, and had never felt so helpless in my life. I had a girlfriend in Connecticut at the time, and as the day went on and more information became known, I had a thousand questions going through my head. How long was Manhattan going to be shut down? The media seemed to be focusing their reports on the status of the travel industry on how 9/11 was affecting the aviation industry, but what about Amtrak and Greyhound? My ex was scheduled to go in for surgery at a hospital in uptown Manhattan a week or two later--to what extent would the hospitals' need to establish triage centres affect her ability to even get admitted? And on and on.

Of all of the CNN footage after the collapse of the towers, one of the most heartwrenching moments for me was a report by Paula Zahn. She was interviewing people who were frantically searching for loved ones feared to have been in the towers when they collapsed, and when she summed up their anguish, she was literally near tears herself. People in broadcast media are trained not to let their personal feelings get in the way of their job, but in this case she had such a hard time doing this that I wished I could just reach over through the TV set and give her a hug and say, "Hang in there. We all love you." When they cut to the anchor, he remarked, "We in the media are trained to be indifferent, but we're not inhuman."

I attended a memorial service at Parliament Hill three days later, and another at Ottawa City Hall on 9/11/02. Sadly, there don't seem to have been any major memorials here in Ottawa since then. The biggest one known for Canada will take place in Halifax, so all I can do is go to the Peace Tower for 8:46 AM Eastern and just reflect on this tragedy. I'll also be going to see "World Trade Center" at our local movie theatre.

I've also seen "United 93", and it's a powerful film. While watching it, I could actually hear Madely's "Oh my God" echoing in my mind at one point.

Well, I was in 4th grade (I'm in the 9th now) when I heard about it. My mom was driving me to my school's Day-care (YMCA) and all the kids that were there was watching the news, I didn't know what was going on I thought they were watching a movie or something than I asked one of my friends and they said that something happened in NYC and that the Twin Towers were hit by airplanes, I also thought they were making that up (Hey I was 9 years old) but then when I started watching the news....well you know where this is going.....

I was watching tv And then I decided to turn it to the news. and then they showed the first twin tower. I live in Oregon so it was very early like in the 6 o clock hour. I remember the news station people didn't even see the plane hitting the 2nd building. they weren't even paying attention like the people watching the news were.

I was in my chem class in highschool

The president of the school came on the innercom and told us what happened. We were allowed to watch the news until around 10:30am and then the school decided to pretend that it was a normal day. I did not even know that the towers had collapsed until after school that day.

Wow I was still in high school at that time. I was in the councelors office and they brought in the tv and put on the news and all of the employees there were watching it. I didn't realize what was happening or how serious it was until I went home that day and turned on the news. Very shocking day, I could never forget it.

I was in California and I didn't know anything was going on until I got to work. That moring, I didn't turn on the t.v. or the radio or anything. I remember arriving to work and my co workers looking so gloom and then I found out. I was glued to my t.v. at every opprotunity I could get.

I also remember wanting to just leave work that day and get in my car and just drive from California to N.Y. because I wanted to be there to help. But I couldn't. But my heart was there.

I was at home in Anchorage Alaska, and downtown was under orders to evacuate, because we had a plane that was near Anchorage that couldn't be reached by radio. It turned out to be just a radio malfunction, but it really brough 9/11 home for those living in Anchorage at the time.

I was at work. We were given our first fifteen minute break and then onthe news the story broke. And we watched live as the first tower fell. God I felt so useless, knowing there were people trapped and we couldn't do anything about it.

    That was cold, Jimmy H!

Who could forget? I was at my office. I came home and found my husband unconscious from a stroke he had while watching the news.
