spelling, grammar, spelling, grammar, spelling, grammar, spelling, grammar, spelling.?

dont you think thats all you hear on here, criticism on the above. I am scared to make a spelling mitsake.....

Update:

I understand when the question is unrecognisable but do you have to pull them up about it, just dont answer the question. A nineteen year old girl posted a question a mo ago about her wisdom teeth, and the first answer she got was, dont worry about your wisdom teeth because your spelling bla bla bla. She might be really sensitive about the fact she cant spell. People need to be a little more sensitive on here, the poor girls got tooth ache and shes being pulled up for her SPELLING and GRAMMAR, its rude.

I'm a translator and proofreader but I don't correct people on the net unless asked to because people that are not linguistically minded just don't care, it's a waste of time, and it just gets on their nerves.

That said, poor grammar, spelling, and punctuation is disturbingly prevalent throughout the net, other people see it, and, knowing no better, copy it; and so the vicious circle goes on until poor English is the norm (if it's not already). I would have to quit my job to correct all the mistakes I see in a day's browsing: this page is full of mistakes (not including the intentional ones), as many from the preachers of good grammar as from the defenders of illiteracy; the lack or overuse of the apostrophe being the worst (Two Weeks' Notice or Two Weeks Notice? Yes, even Warner Bros get it wrong, so what hope for the rest of us?). And what can we do when even respected websites like the BBC are rife with mistakes?

By the way, the spell check is useful but not perfect. I almost put "quite my job" because my fingers are always racing ahead typing common words before my brain reaches them to tell them what they should actually be typing. The spell check wouldn't have picked that up. It probably wouldn't pick up all poor punctuation either, e.g. the difference between it's and its.

This site is actually not that bad compared to many forums I've seen, so perhaps some tolerance should be exercised.

It's SHAMEFUL and deplorable that anyone can't spell correctly in his day and age. Talk about the 'dumbing down' of the country. Not only can so many not spell, they cannot so much as begin to formulate a sentence. My son could do that in third grade. Very scary. People are shocked to see this, which is why it gets the reaction it does.

If someone comes on here asking for an answer to a question they have, they should at the very least have the courtesy to check their spelling. It's called "respect". THEY are the ones being rude (use spell check, use a dictionary, or ask someone) You get back what you put out in this world...just sayin'.

Of course it matters. First off good grammar and spelling helps your reader understand your message. Secondly, using improper grammar and spelling tells your reader that you did not take pride in your work and that you are probably lazy and not very intelligent. For example, "Does it really matter if your spelling or grammar are not perfect. With spellcheck you get most right so most of it is understand and is understanding not te main issue here" Before answering the question I had to translate it for understanding. So you are right, understanding is the main idea here, but who has time to translate bad English into good English when reading a document? Doesn't a well written and edited document add to the documents understanding?

    I agree with you.

The only time I ever make a comment about someones spelling and grammar is if they are not asking a legitimate question, such as when the question involves a racist comment or something like that. Then I will suggest to the person that their question is stupid and I will add "you can't spell either."

You are entirely correct though, if someone is in emotional or physical pain, it is rude and cruel to make comments on the grammar and spelling.

    Thank you for your posting.

No, that's not all you hear on here. If you're scared to make a spelling mitsake, then why not be a little more careful and try to do a better job at it?

It's not difficult to post a message which makes sense so that people can understand it. There is even a spell checker you can use before you post the message. It's shocking some of the spelling/grammar though.

I don't think most people have a problem with the occasional typo or misspelled word. Speaking for myself, what annoys me is (1) Netspeak, where u wonder how ne1 can translate, and (2) non-native speakers who fail to communicate because they are unfamiliar with the language. I am more ready to excuse them than I am the teens who think they are texting when they post a question here. I consider it a form of disrespect, and if it takes me too long to decode what a questioner is asking, I won't bother. But that's just me.

Unfortunately, when people don't spell correctly or follow the grammatical rules we were all taught (except for those who are might be going by old grammar rules and haven't been taught the new ones or those still learning them) it makes them look stupid. I know I am not the only one who thinks this. I think it's pretty sad that so many people cannot spell correctly.

You're afraid of making a spelling mistake? Really? How would you feel about being alone in a dark alley with six very large and dangerous looking thugs? A little perspective, please. Criticism from the answer board on yahoo really isn't that scary. But if you really want to impress people, just click that little icon that says 'Check Spelling' and watch the magic happen. ;)

It's not the small mistakes like muistake, where I accidentally typed the letter u into it (as you notice u is next to i on the keyboard). Those people, who can't even be bothered ending their sentences with a full stop and starting their next ones with a capital letters or those who can't compose a simple question like 'what was..the yous most like the best in them tune?' instead of 'What's your favourite tune at the moment?' or something like that. So don't worry if you spell a word incorrectlie. :-)
