How do you get a musty/mildew smell out of a washer and dryer?

A friend gave us his 4 year old washer and dryer and it had a musty smell in both. I've washed at least 10 loads and the smell is still there. I've even used bleach. All the clothes i've washed come out of the dryer smelling like they sat wet for a few days in the washer. Any suggestions?

Try running the washer with nothing in it and adding bleach, lots of it and letting it cycle a couple of times. Also you can add rinse with nothing in there for added scent. Check the lines though to make sure there is no mildew in them, but since you said the dryer is the same they prob just need to air out and flush out the smell. Try soaking some towels in rinse and ring them out well and throw them in the dryer and let it run for a while, only like 2 towels though so it can still breathe enough to get the smell out. Then leave the dryer open and let it air out. Also use a downy ball it really helps your clothes stay smelling fresh. Last thought... Have you changed your detergent lately. Maybe you got a bad brand or just a bad box. Tide with Downy or Febreeze really smells good.

Check all the intakes of water like the hoses... see if you can buy a mildew removel product sells at homedepot and stores like them... and throurly clean your washer... may have to take it apart! if that don't work ensure you don't leave your clothes in the wet washer for any amount of time! that will just increase the smell of mildew!

    Good luck

You might take the cover off the front and see if something is stuck in there. We had a problem with mice getting into the workings of our washer. We never got one stuck in there, but if you got a funny smell you never know.

Try to run a load with nothing but bleach and warm water for a whole cycle and you can do the same thing to a dishwasher

Look an see if the hose attachments, the gaskets or the tub rims has mildewed and needs to be replaced.
