Besides color is there a difference between black labs, chocolate labs and yellow labs?

I heard a yellow lab was more mellow than either a black or chocolate lab. I also heard that a chocolate lab was more high strung? Is any of this true? I do know (from experience) that golden retrievers have a very loving and gentle nature. I also owned a black lab for 8 years who was very playful and loyal up until his death at age 12. Thanks for your input.

Yellow - more mellow and most trainable

black - some can be pretty wild, but some are very calm

    chocolate - least trainable

JMO, I have had many, many Labs in classes over the years, and this is a generalization. Temperaments can vary quite a bit according to coat type and color in some breeds, such as Dachshunds and Shelties.

There is no difference dependent upon the color of the lab but labs are very different individuals. Even in the same litter there will be some that want all the attention, some that are clownish, some that are protective, and each lab will make sure you know its personality. Color difference? No. Individual differences? Yes, many. Labs can and do "do it all" and they do it well. You just have to match up the personality to the desired training. They do everything from seeing-eye to drug detection and everything in between.

Hey... I don't know about these people, But your absolutely correct about the difference in color & behavior. I have one of each and the Chocolate Lab is by far the goofiest of them all. My Yellow is very mellow, And the Black stinker thinks he's the mighty protecter. Even thougvh he's a little short for the breed.

The color is the only difference. One litter of pups from one sire (dad) can have all 3 colors. We have known labs of many colors, and much of the behavior reflects the patience, persistence and training of the OWNER.

Jeez now people are trying to differentiate us by color. Really the only ones to avoid are SCIENCE labs.

No, but there is the English version and the European version of the lab.

Color coat is an effect of incomplete dominance, but I have never heard of behavioral linkage to the alleles for that color variation.

i think that male block heads are more high strung. we have owned many labs and still own and train one and i have found the females are more mellow but they are all eager to please

There is no real difference apart from what you would find between individual dogs.

After all, all colours are used as guide dogs, so they would have to have stable temps
