Why are so many manufacturers producing cars that look like they have been styled by a cartoonist?

I'm thinking of the new Mini, Yaris, 5 BM, 3 Mazda and others. What do you think of this trend?

Update:

If you think about it for a mo, you'll notice that truly exotic marques eg. Ferrarri, Maserati, Aston have not fallen for this trend at all and even Alfa have retained sleek in their vocabulary.

I thought the Aztec was ugly until I saw the Toyota Scion, a breadbox on wheels. The Toyota sales rep told me it had "a cult following." Uh, ok. Probably the same people who were married by the Rev. Moon.

Well my pet peeves are the Honda Pilot and the Scion XB which I regard to be in a neck and neck competition to be the ugliest car sold in the United States.

I love this trend. It shows a lot of creativity.

It's a lot better than 20 years ago where every care resembled a square or rectangled box
