What are some yummy, satisfying, healthy & cheap snack food options?

In NYC food is so expensive, and I am a snacker. I eat cheese, but that is a lot of fat, nuts make your hands greasy and are also fatty/salty/sugary...other things don't do well "on the go." Anyone have any ideas for good, healthy, and neat snack foods that don't cost much?

I'm a big fan of yogurt mixed with fresh fruit. Yogurt is pretty cheap, and you can vary the fruit depending on the season. I like to throw in a couple tablespoons of raisins or dried cranberries, too.

a cup of hot chocolate or skimmed milk + homemade muffins

    <<<< Blueberry Buttermilk Muffins >>>> makes 12 (250kcal each)

    400g plain flour

    150g caster sugar

    1 tablespoon baking powder

1 finely grated rind of lemon

    1/2 teaspoon salt

    284ml carton buttermilk

    2 eggs, beaten

    85g butter, melted

250g fresh or frozen blueberries, used straight from frozen

    1) Preheat the oven to 200 degree C / Gas 6 / fan oven 180 degree C. Butter a 12-hole muffin tin.

    2) In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, lemon rind and salt. In a separate bow, mix together the buttermilk, eggs and butter.

    3) Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk mixture, stir until the ingredients are just combined and the mixture is quite stiff, but don't over-mix.

    4) Lightly fold in the blueberries, then spoon the mixture into the tins to fill generously.

    5) Bake for about 25 minutes or until risen and pale golden on top. Leave to cool in the tin for about 5 minutes before turning out on to a wire rack, as the muffins are quite delicate when hot.

a cup of hot reduced sugar soy milk + 2 crackers

Fruit would be the best option. Ever tried the cranberry raisins? They are pretty good. Celery and peanut butter, if you have time to make it at home. Dry cereal is a good one. I'm not big on soy stuff, but the soy chips with white cheddar are great! Granola bars, if you pick the right ones. Log onto Spark People.com, and look at the dessert recipes. There's one in there for fudge that only has 39 calories per serving. It's really good!

I have fallen in love with the 100 Calorie Packs. There are sooo many different options - Oreo Crips, Cheez Its, Ritz Mix, even Pringles. They are a good price and really great on the go.

Another idea is granola bars because they are very filling, good for you, and usually inexpensive. Check the box to see how many calories, because some can have a little too much.

Fruit leather is another good idea, just make sure you get the 100% fruit kind. They're usually only 45 calories and super good!

Fruit is always a good option. Grapes, bananas, and sliced apples are cheap and yummy.

The general belief is that snack foods are not healthy. Cheap snack foods are probably even less healthy. Wish I could tell you otherwise, but I can't.
