Since you ask for a city I will select Bangkok. It's one of my favorite cities in the world. It's got everything! Wonderful people, great nightlife and terrific restaurants. So many things to see...the Palace and temples, a beautiful zoo, the ChyaoPraya with all it's activity, and also lots of activities to do...and then there is the shopping! The traffic is not so good but the new underground and the skytrain take you quickly and cooly around town. Plus, Bangkok is right in the middle of my favorite country...what more can you want? Chiang Mai just isn't as exciting. I live in San Francisco.

No one has said any city in the area of Isaan, so I'm claiming that as my favourite place in Thailand. As for cities, hmm how about Si Sa Ket, yeah that's my favourite city in Thailand for today.
My reasons for loving this area so much are these:
1. there's just so much history to be seen and explored
2. not many foreigners go up to Isaan so it's a lot more traditional than other more touristy places
3. the food in Isaan is very different and i love watching the people cook it
4. the romance of the Mekong River on one border is lovely
5. Cambodia on the other border and Preah Vihear is just amazing
6. I would say the people are more friendly than the rest of Thailand, but that sounds mean, because all people in Thailand are very friendly. I'll say in Isaan they are just a little bit more friendly, ok.
Oh and I'm from Australia, but want to move back overseas (probably SEA again) to live and work and explore and enjoy.
PS. I used to love Chiang Mai, but it's become much bigger from when I first went there many years ago and has grown too much for me now (though I do love the exhilaration of BKK all the same).

If you want to see the real Thailand go to Sukothai, but I like Bangkok yes it is a city and all the things that a city haves without the rude people like you get in London, Paris Edinburgh ( Glasgow Scotland is another city you should go to)
Fav beach resort is Pattaya not for the all night bars but for the variety of activities at such cheap prices unlike Koh Samui and Phuket.

Koh Samui is an island not a city!
Every city in Thailand, just like every city in every country has it's good and bad points. Each to their own.
Are you looking for information on Thailand because you want to travel there or what?

Phuket because of the beaches and all of the wonder activities that take place there. I hope to go back and see other parts of Thailand. There is so much to do and see in this country.
I am an American who is currently living in Japan.

Chiang Mai.
It's less crowded than Bangkok and not as hot, but everything is readily available.
The people are even more friendly, and there seems to be more to do.
The architecture is far better, with few high rises, plenty of restaurants of every nationality, a wide variety of accomodation, and I love the hill-tribes and the mountains which are easily accessible from Chiang Mai.
I'm from UK

I love Chiang Mai, and while I agree it isn't as 'exciting' as Bangkok it is a great city. The people are so nice and helpful. The Sunday night market as well as the night bazaar are great places to bargin. It is also close to lots of things in the area. Hill tribe visits, waterfalls, elephant conservations, Pai a great little relaxing town.

Working in Thailand for 4 years now, in different locations. Think Bangkok is great, it has everything! Food, shopping, entertainment. People here speaks some English, cause my 'pha-sa Thai mai keang' ;-) Traffic jams and air pollution are bad, I overcomed them with travelling by BTS/MRT :-)

Although I live in bkk and would not want to live anywhere else, I love to visit Ayudhaya. It is so peaceful, I find I can think really clearly when I go there and walk around the old temples and palace grounds.
