Ironing/pressing clothes?
This question is not a criticism just that I am curious.
I noticed on my visits to the US that clothes lines are not in the backyard of homes nor do people iron their own clothes at home (as we do in Australia) but either send their clothes out to the dry cleaners or fold them straight from the clothes dryer. Is this normal practice in American homes?

There are still some who hang their clothes and iron them as well. The majority of people use their clothes dryers which have permanent press features that gently dry the permanent press clothes with minimum wrinkling. Some just fold them and some hang them on clothes hangers immediately. Some items may need a touchup with an iron but the whole load does not normally get ironed.
There are some developments that do not allow clothes to be hung in the yards and clothes lines are banned. Some places have polution or odors that you would not want to hang clothes outside. Many people with their busy schedules do not have time to hang clothes outside. Towels get soft and fluffy in the dryer and hard and scratchy when hung outside.

I hang clothes up in my house. I have the plastic door hanger things on my doors, so I'm able to hang my clothes on those to dry. Other than that, I do fold the clothes right out of the dryer. And I'm not sure about the rest of the general population of the US, but most people I know DO iron their clothes.

Well I live in Iowa, so alot of people have clothes lines, and i iron my clothes the night before i wear them but i do fold them up but then unfold them to iron
Do you ride kangaroos to work because i think that would be awesome. And do those koala bears bite and if not can you send me one?
And i do have a dryer but my mom never shuts up about how "fresh" they smell when you dry them outside
But i prefer the dryer bcause it doesnt make um so stiff and i also own an iron

Very few Americans use clothes lines anymore. We either use the clothes dryer or send the clothes out. You are very observant!

I think that backyard clothes lines are passe, having been replaced by electric or gas clothes dryers. (A lot of people associate the drying of clothes on lines with low-income housing.)
Ironing clothes takes a lot of time, and the popularity of permanent-press shirts and pants reflects how consumers have voted with their checkbooks.

I still hang my clothes out to dry and iron them very orning at home.... and nobody can say it is time consuming because I have 5 kids and a husband so that is 7 outfits a day!

if you take your permanent press clothes out of the dryer after the cool down before it stops, you don't need to iron it. plus, half of the people here just wear t=shirts anyway. things here in the US are way too relaxed and casual anymore.

It is in ours. I will be honest with you... neither of us has the time or energy to iron. We are lucky that we make enough money that we can be spoiled and send out dress shirts (both his and mine) out to the cleaners. Also, I am a big fan of wrinkle-free materials. It's easier to find easy-care slacks and shirts for men than for me, but that just helps. As a matter of fact, I can't even remember where our iron is and our ironing board has cobwebs on it. I am not kidding, honest.

Some people do iron, you may just not notice it, and some people do have clothes lines. But the observations you've made are true as well.
